This project started out as a ‘bedroom addition’ to an aged, independent house, as the family was welcoming a new bride to live with them. But eventually after connecting over some heartfelt conversations with the client, we decided to add a considerable area on the upper level of the house, and modified the existing house to create a better design overall. A courtyard was introduced strategically, which brough in natural light to the formal and informal living spaces and provided an enrtrance to access the upper level.
It was conceptualized as a ‘home within a home’, as we added spaces that were semi-private and private for the newly wedded couple – a living room, a mezzanine space that could be used as a work-space, a private balcony and a bedroom with attached walk-in closet and a bathroom. This was in a style that was like the lofts of New York, with brick aesthetics and a black & white colour palette. The new addition was kept modern, and the existing home was in a more traditional style, highlighting a contrast intentionally of the ‘old and new.’
