Remote Learning Frequently asked questions

  1. What are the parent/guardian requirements/expectations if my student enrolls in Remote Learning?

Just like a traditional classroom, parental involvement in your child’s education will be a key factor in determining student success. The level of support varies depending on the age and maturity of the child. The online teacher will engage with and support their students every day in a variety of ways, as well as providing office hours for additional assistance.

2. What are student expectations for remote learning?

Students will participate in daily guided online instruction with their teacher, as well as independent learning to complete assignments. Time spent engaged in learning will vary depending on grade level but will be comparable to what students are accustomed to in a traditional school setting.

3. How will I meet my child’s teacher?

A virtual “Meet the Teacher” will be scheduled in the days leading up to the first class day. Information on dates and times will be posted on each campuses website and social media platforms.

Technology

4. Must I have a device and WiFi to participate in remote learning?

Students enrolled in remote learning must have access to the internet and devices for the remote learning experience. Hardships will be addressed on an individual basis with their school principal.

5. Will there be technology support for students and parents?

Yes, any family selecting remote learning will be required to participate in an online orientation prior to the start of the school year. In addition there will be a technology support center open from 8 AM - 8 PM Monday - Friday.

6. When will the parent meeting for virtual learning take place?

Prior to the first class day, we will advertise the meetings on our website and social media and contact parents using the email address provided when they completed the questionnaire.

7. How will remote learning be different from the last nine weeks of instruction this past spring?

In the spring, we had one week to prepare remote learning. We have worked this summer to build a robust remote offering – Remote Learning 2.0. All instruction will be provided to students by Los Fresnos CISD teachers. Students are expected to participate in class daily. Parents selecting remote learning will be required to attend a virtual instructional technology orientation the week before school starts to detail remote learning expectations.

8. Does my child have to log in and participate in class all day every day?

Yes. Students must make daily progress in order to be counted present. Students may access learning synchronously (during the scheduled class time) or asynchronously (at another time within the same day). The only exception is any Dual Enrollment, AP or Honors course in grades 9 through 12. Those courses must be accessed synchronously.

9. How will attendance be taken for remote learning? Will absences affect grade promotion?

In remote learning, students must engage with the teacher or the Google Classroom platform daily in order to be counted present. According to the TEA, students must be marked present 90% of the time to be promoted to the next grade level.

10. If our family selects remote learning are we able to pick up meals daily?

Los Fresnos CISD’s Transportation and Child Nutrition offices are currently working on a coordinated plan to deliver meals to district attendance zones for households choosing remote instruction. Our planning includes delivering breakfast and lunch meal bundles to be delivered on Mondays (2-meal bundles) and Wednesdays (3-meal bundles).

11. Will there be changes to the grading policy?

The grading policy remains the same for the 2020-2021 school year regardless of the instructional method.

12. If my family selects remote learning, is my student able to participate in extracurricular activities on campus?

Yes. As per UIL Guidelines, all students enrolled -- whether in-person, hybrid or remote -- are eligible to participate in UIL extracurricular activities.

13. Will there be tutorials for remote learning students?

Yes. Each campus will be releasing information on tutoring sessions (elementary) and homework centers (secondary) during the fall semester.

14. What platform will be used for remote learning?

Google Classroom will be used district-wide for all remote learning coursework. Dual Credit courses will use the platform required by the dual enrollment partner/university.
