Health Frequently asked questions

  1. Will masks be part of the dress code?

Masks will be a dress code requirement and enforced. In addition, all masks will need to be appropriate for a classroom environment. Masks deemed inappropriate by campus administration will not be allowed. In the event that a student forgets his/her mask, disposable masks will be available.

  1. Will temperature checks be done daily?

Yes. All students and staff will have daily temperature checks completed before entering a campus. Additionally, students using the district's transportation will have a temperature check before boarding the bus. Anyone with a temperature of 100.0 or above will not be allowed on the bus or on campus.

  1. If a student has a fever will they be required to have a COVID-19 test before returning to campus?

No. A fever alone is not a requirement for COVID-19 testing. However, a student must complete the following before returning to school:

1. At least one day (24 hours) has passed since recovery (resolution of fever without the use of fever reducing medications);

2. Improvement in symptoms

3. At least 10 days have passed since symptoms first appeared.

A medical professional with an alternate diagnosis must be provided in order to return prior to the 10-day isolation.

  1. What precautions will be taken if a child becomes sick or is found to be sick while at school?

Ill or symptomatic students will be seen and isolated by school nurses and treated accordingly. Parents will be contacted to arrange for their child to be picked up. Please keep in mind that this covers illnesses and symptoms other than COVID-19.

  1. Will I be notified if someone on my child’s campus tests positive for COVID-19?

Yes. We will follow guidance from the Cameron County Health Department that will include assistance with contact tracing, and notification to parents and staff if someone on a campus tests positive for COVID-19. Proper disinfection procedures will begin immediately.

  1. Will a campus close if one person tests positive for COVID-19?

If a person tests positive, the district will immediately complete contact tracing and notify any individuals who had “close contact” with the positive individual. Proper disinfection procedures will begin immediately. Decisions on closing a campus will be made dependent upon the contact tracing and on a case by case basis.

  1. If a teacher tests positive will all the students in his or her class be required to be tested before returning to campus?

Proper notification will be made to all individuals who came in close contact with the teacher. The Cameron County Health Services Department and the Los Fresnos CISD Health Services nurses will provide guidance to all parents dependent upon the level of contact.

  1. How long will a school be closed if a staff or student tests positive for COVID-19?

In the event of a positive case of COVID-19, the Los Fresnos CISD will work in conjunction with Cameron County Health Department to determine the appropriate course of action based on the specific situation. Each situation will be handled on an individual basis dependent upon the results of contact tracing.

Students who test positive will be required to continue with online classroom learning while under the care of a physician.

Students will have the ability to learn from home if they are unable to return to campus based on a doctor's order. A student’s health and wellness comes first. It is encouraged that students participate as soon as they recover.
