In Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones, concepts of automation, as mentioned in chapter 10 of the book, are seen throughout the movie. Droids are fictional robots that automate many different things in the Star Wars movies. The popular droid known as R2-D2 first appears at 3:06, R2-D2 helps with the navigation of spaceships and can interface with computers like those in the spaceships or later in the droid factory. At 11:50 we see a droid being used to deliver bugs that are meant to kill Padme. It flies to her bedroom and cuts a hole in the window to deliver the bugs. At 22:20 in the club, there’s a screen displaying a sporting event with the players being droids. There’s a droid server in a café at 31:41, and another droid is seen serving meals on a spaceship at 34:58. On Tatooine at 1:04:05, droids are being used to pull carts. At 1:11:34, we see C-3PO helping around on a farm on Tatooine. He’s another popular droid capable of speaking and translating many different languages from across the galaxy. On Geonosis, there’s an entirely automated factory for building battle droids, first shown at 1:16:11. During the battle on Geonosis, the battle droids are used to fight the Jedi and Clones.
Automation plays a big part in the movie, used for daily tasks like navigation or physical tasks like pulling carts. However, automation is also used to automate warfare, with the entire process of making droids for battle being automated. People are shown to coexist with automation, using it to often simplify or aid in tasks. Automated technology seems to be spread across the entire galaxy, though it’s worth noting that on Tatooine, droids are shown to aid with more manual labor. On Coruscant, droids perform more commodity tasks, like serving coffee or playing sports.
