Heredotus-Father of History
Herodotus was a Greek writer and geographer credited with being the first historian. Around the year 425 B.C., Herodotus published his magnum opus: a long account of the Greco-Persian Wars that he called “The Histories.” (The Greek word “historie” means “inquiry.”) Scholars have been following in Herodotus’ footsteps for 2,500 years.
What is History?
History in simple words means the 'Study of past'. We study about people- the way they lived, their culture, traditions, art, literature etc. This discipline emphasizes on the reigns of various kings, their rule and administration, their conquests and their achievements and failures.
Importance of study of History
It is important to study history as it helps us understand the past to predict the future and helps in creating it. Studying history opens the door of opportunities for better understanding of our past experiences by counting on the great achievements and avoiding horrendous mistakes.
Nature of history
History deals with man's struggle through ages. It traces the fascinating story of how man has developed through the ages, how man has studied to use and control his environment and how the present institutions have grown from the past. It deals with the series of events and each event occurs at a given point in time. History talks about nations and human activities in the context of their physical and geographical environment. Out of this arise the varied trends in the political, social, economic and cultural spheres of man's activities and achievements.
Scope of history
The scope of history is vast. History which was only limited to a local saga, has during course of century became universal history of mankind, depicting man's achievements in every field of life- political, economical, social, cultural, scientific, technological, religious, artistic etc., and at various levels- local, regional, national and international. History today has become an all-embracing comprehensive subject with almost limitless extent.
