Dear Dan, Courtney, Tim, and Abby!
This email is provides some further clarity on my role, timeline, and some thoughts about future scenarios as we move forward with job descriptions, transitions and the 2025 budget.
I recently shared this document which includes:
· A summary of LeRoy’s future possible roles
· Environmental Program Managers Projects and Resources and a related “Sustainability Manager” position
· A draft job description for an Environmental Projects Engineer
To reiterate, I look forward to continuing at the Township in 2025 to assist part-time or on a contract basis. I am currently interested in the following, but also open to suggestion and negotiation!
· Working with our volunteer/citizen Green Team to continue recycling and related events such as the Green Fair, Sustainable Home & Business Tour, Spring and Fall Recycling Events, etc. Help recruit and retain 250+ volunteers to assist with these events. Maintain connections with students, advisors, and clubs to help. Help recruit sponsors to support these events.
· Hosting monthly “Green Dialogues” on Zoom as a vehicle for citizen engagement, discussion of important topics of concern, and education about timely topics. Over 150 dialogues have been held during the past 3.5 years. Almost 90 have been recorded and remain available on a YouTube Playlist at http://tinyurl.com/green-dialogues.
· Orient, assist, and train new staff to… (transition related)
o Respond to information requests (call-in, website, email, etc.)
o Update fliers, factsheets, newsletters, mailers, website, social media with current environmental information
o Assist with implementation and evolution of the Climate Sustainability Plan
o Administer the Green Grant Program and Climate Sustainability Funding
o Maintain internal recycling and waste reduction efforts, coordinating with Meridian’s DPW Superintendent.
o Assist with grant-writing and reporting related to energy, water, and other environmental initiatives.
o Support to the Environmental Commission and related citizen teams/study groups including the Green Team, Energy Team, Green Burial Team, Wetland Education Team, Green Neighbors Network, etc.
o Coordinate programming with Parks, Public Works, Communications, and other relevant departments, Commissions, and local units of government (such as FOG awareness, No Wipes, RecycleMI, stormwater awareness (www.mywatersheds.org), etc.
o Participate in regional networking and coordination (Michigan Green Communities, Regional Recycling Coordinating Committee, Capital Area Sustainability Partnership, Tri-County Regional Planning Commission, etc.)
o Collaborate/coordinate students, volunteers, and interns such as Graduate Fellows through the Catalyst Leadership Circle, ACTION, Earth Club, Climate Corps, etc.
o Support the Recycling Center/Transfer Station with permitting and improvements.
o Imagine new ways to engaging and educating the public about the environment, green infrastructure, sustainability, and related topics.
Some ongoing items for discussion:
1. Could Meridian consider two part-time positions? (there might be some seniors, students, or others might enjoy or prefer 20 hour/week on these and related projects). There are obvious advantages to hiring part-time person(s). For example, if benefits are included, Meridian might be able to afford two or three part-timers for the price of a full time position. Could we list a variety of positions to “test the waters” --- for example, maybe there’s an Environmental Engineer that also has experience with grant, community organizing, etc…. or a retired Engineer that might want to help with energy/environmental projects?
2. Are there current staff that might enjoy expanding their work on environmental projects?
3. What tasks/projects are a priority and which might be eliminated/reconsidered? What’s missing? What might be expanded?
4. To whom should new hires report to? For example, and Environmental Engineer might report to Engineering and an outreach person/educator/organizer might report to Parks. The original “Recycling Coordinator” position was a blend of Admin/Twp Mgr and Engineering. Should new position be a joint appointment or be based in Admin?
Thanks for listening and brainstorming with me. I look forward to your comments, questions and discussion of how I can be helpful as we move forward.
It’s a pleasure working with you!
LeRoy
