BORUSSIA DORTMUND KIT COMPETITION

German Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund launched a kit design competition for the 2023/24 season back in January, an effort to create a connection between the club and fans. In the end, thousands of proposals were submitted, including one of my own. While my idea didn't make it into the final designs, I want to still show off my concept for the team.

My idea was simple: reflect what the club means to its supporters and fans. Using the famed "Yellow Wall" at the club's home ground at Signal Iduna Park, I came up with a couple of variations, one using the FIFA Kit Creator and one using my own patterns and template on Inkscape. Both of them played off of the same design: a blend of various sized checkers and diagonal stripes meant to mimic the tapestry of scarves, flags, and shirts that crowd the "Yellow Wall" each match. The FIFA Kit Creator edition features a "glitched checkers" pattern found on the site, while the version designed in Inkscape uses a custom pattern of checkers repeatedly increasing in size.

While this concept didn't make it to the final stage, I think the idea was there. It is unique and ties the club to its supporters in a way few designs can. This was the only design I submitted, but if you want to take a look at the finalists, you can find them here: Kit Contest (bvb.de)

If you are interested in throwing together some of your own designs, the FIFA Kit Creator is a great way to do so in a free (or cheap with their plus features) manner, and with little hassle. Feel free to follow me there at SSmith Designs! I will also post some of my work from there every now and again!
