In my childhood, I usually ate from the kitchen rather than from the dining room because watching my Amma's effortless cooking style used to be a treat. Amma was the definition of multitasking. I help her in cooking by breaking and grating the coconut. My first major cooking adventure started in Bangalore in 2010, when my sister was pregnant. I remember making some curries that she was unable to eat, partly due to their bad flavour and partly due to her nausea. It took me almost 14 more years to cook again. But this time, cooking really caught me. I have converted my small hostel room into a kitchen. Though we are not supposed to cook in the hostel room, I took the risk to cook, as in North India, it is hard to get food that I grew up eating from Kerala. From the hostel mess, I could hardly experience the smell that emanates while tempering a dish with coconut oil, mustard, curry leaves, and chillies, the smell I grew up with every single day in my childhood.
