Uncivil behavior in the workplace is a common issue that hurts people and lowers productivity and performance among employees in a workplace. Two recurring forms of this include aggression and bullying. The article by Bandow & Hunter (2008) is a great source for discovering ways for a workplace to develop a policy to address this issue.
The biggest takeaway for me was that different workplaces define incivility differently. I can relate to this in my previous work experiences. Working for my town's parks department during the summers while an undergrad, workers were a little rougher around the edges. I remember that as long as we got the job done, personal relationships weren't really focused on. On the flip side, working for the United Way had a great aura of professionalism and etiquette that went along with it. Hence, stricter policies on workplace civility were surely in place to prevent any sort of aggressive or unprofessional behaviors.
