First awarded in 2024 the by the SQC's newly formed Champion's Committee, who were tasked with finding someone "who have made considerable, outstanding, or exceptional achievements".
The first recipient of the award was "for her fight for women's rights and service to justice for all." and went to Gisèle Pelicot, on 20 December 2024.
From 01 October 2025, the SQC Champion of the Year would operate independently of the SQC. It was at this time that the Champion's Committee was renamed to officially be the Immortal Council of Champions. Unlike some awards, the CotY shortlist is released at 15:00 on 20 December each year the same time the Champion is announced.
