How to contact us about privacy or data rights
All privacy questions, data access or deletion requests, GDPR or California requests, and support topics must be submitted only through the developer contact details published for Splittr on Google Play. We do not accept privacy or legal requests by postal mail, social media, or other unofficial channels.
1. Scope
This Privacy Policy applies when you:
● Use Splittr in a web browser, or
● Install and use the Android app from Google Play.
It covers our app client, our Splittr backend API (authentication and online data for accounts, expenses, groups, friends, balances, activity, and notifications), and Google services used for sign-in and distribution (Google Sign-In / Google Identity and Google Play).
Third-party services have their own privacy policies; we use them as described here and in their terms.
2. Summary
Accounts — You sign in with Google. We receive profile information Google provides for sign-in (such as display name, email, and photo). You must add a phone number before using the main app.
Expense splitting — Groups, friends, expenses, splits, settlements, balances, activity, and notifications may be stored on our servers and cached on your device when you use the app.
Contacts (Android) — With your permission, the app may read device contacts so you can pick a phone number or sync contacts for friend discovery. Normalized contact details may be sent to our servers for matching other Splittr users.
Ads — Splittr does not show third-party advertising networks such as Google AdMob.
Purchases — Splittr does not process card payments in the app. We do not receive your bank or card details.
Selling data — We do not sell your personal information to data brokers.
3. Information we collect
3.1 You provide
● Google account profile — Display name, email, and photo URL provided through Google Sign-In when you authenticate.
● Phone number — Required after sign-in to use the app.
● Expense and group content — Group names and descriptions, invite codes, expense amounts, descriptions, categories, split details, settlements, and related information you enter.
● Lookups you initiate — Phone numbers or emails you enter to find a friend or add a group member.
3.2 Generated when you use Splittr
● Account identifiers — Internal user IDs issued by our backend, plus session access and refresh tokens.
● Social and membership data — Friend relationships, group memberships, roles, and invite codes.
● Financial and activity data — Expenses, splits, settlements, balances, simplified debts, spending summaries, activity timeline events, and in-app notifications.
● Sync and offline state — Cached API responses, ETag values, offline outbox entries, and related job status used to keep the app in sync.
● Contact discovery data — When you use contact features, contact phone numbers and related discovery results processed to help you find people already on Splittr.
● Preferences — Settings such as home currency associated with your account.
3.3 Device and technical
● Browser: localStorage, IndexedDB, and similar APIs for auth tokens, caches, feed snapshots, and offline write queues.
● Android: Network access for API sync and Google Sign-In; Capacitor Preferences and local storage for the same kinds of caches; optional contacts permission for contact picker and contact sync.
● Technical logs — Our servers and hosting may process IP address, timestamps, and request metadata needed to operate and secure the service.
3.4 We do not intentionally collect
We do not require your home address or government ID to use Splittr. Do not put passwords for other services, government IDs, or health information in expense descriptions or other free-text fields.
4. How we use information
We use it to:
5. Run Splittr, sync your data, and show the UI.
6. Authenticate you with Google and maintain your session.
7. Require and store your phone number for account use and user lookup.
8. Provide groups, friends, expenses, settlements, balances, activity, and notifications.
9. Support contact picker and contact discovery where you grant permission.
10. Cache data on your device for performance and offline resilience.
11. Protect security, prevent abuse, and keep the service reliable.
12. Comply with law and enforce our Terms & Conditions.
We do not send marketing email unless you later opt in to a separate list; the app does not require it.
5. Legal bases (EEA, UK, and similar)
Where GDPR or similar laws apply, we rely on:
● Contract — Providing the app, account, sync, and features you request.
● Legitimate interests — Security, anti-abuse, stability, and aggregated troubleshooting, balanced against your rights.
● Consent — Where required, such as Android contacts permission or other optional permissions offered by the device.
● Legal obligation — When the law requires retention or disclosure.
6. Who we share with (processors)
6.1 Our backend and hosting
We operate the Splittr API and related infrastructure. Account, expense, group, friend, balance, activity, notification, and contact-discovery data are processed there on our instructions to provide the service.
6.2 Google
● Google Sign-In / Google Identity — Authentication.
● Google Play — Distribution of the Android app.
Policy: https://policies.google.com/privacy
6.3 Other Splittr users
People in your groups or on a friend track with you can see shared information needed for bill splitting, such as your display name, photo, shared expenses, balances, and related activity in that context.
6.4 Other
We may disclose information if lawfully required, or to protect users, the public, or our rights. We may share aggregated statistics that do not identify you.
7. International transfers
If you are in the EEA, UK, or Switzerland, your data may be processed in India, the United States, or other countries where we or our processors (including Google) operate. We rely on appropriate safeguards (such as Standard Contractual Clauses) where required, as described in those processors’ documentation.
8. Retention
● Account and app data — Kept while your account exists and for legitimate business needs afterward as required by law.
● On-device data — Sign-out clears tokens and local caches as implemented in the app. Clearing app data or uninstalling removes local copies; server-side records remain until deleted through our account processes or cleanup policies.
● Contact discovery data — Retained as needed to provide discovery and for security and abuse prevention, subject to our cleanup practices.
● Legal holds — Longer retention if required for disputes or compliance.
9. Security
We use HTTPS for API traffic and industry-standard authentication tokens for signed-in sessions. Access to account and group data is controlled by our backend authorization rules. No method is 100% secure.
10. Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, restrict, object, export, or withdraw consent. To exercise any right, use only the developer contact details published for Splittr on Google Play and describe your request. We verify identity where reasonable (for example, by matching your Google account email to account activity).
Account controls — You can update your phone number where the app allows, manage contacts permission in Android system settings, and sign out in Profile. For a full server-side erasure request, contact us through the Google Play developer contact details and identify your account.
11. California residents (CCPA / CPRA)
Categories we may collect include: identifiers (account IDs, Google email, phone number, device or storage-related identifiers), customer records (profile and contact details you provide), commercial information (expense and settlement history in the app), internet or network activity (app and API interactions), and inferences drawn from usage (such as balances and activity summaries).
We use this information for the purposes in Section 4. We do not “sell” personal information in the conventional sense. California residents may have rights to know, delete, correct, and opt out of certain sharing for cross-context behavioral advertising. Submit any request only through the developer contact details published for Splittr on Google Play.
We do not knowingly sell personal information of consumers under 16 without affirmative authorization.
12. Children
Splittr is a bill-splitting and expense-tracking app and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 without verifiable parental consent where that is required. If you believe a child has provided personal information, contact us only through the developer contact details published for Splittr on Google Play so we can delete it.
Your Google Play target audience and content declarations must match this policy.
Minimum age: You must be 13 or older to use Splittr, or the minimum age required in your country if higher, unless parental requirements apply.
13. Web vs Android
Both the browser and Android apps use Google Sign-In, phone verification, and our backend for expenses, groups, friends, balances, activity, and notifications. On Android, native Google Sign-In and optional device contacts access are available. On the web, data is stored using browser storage such as localStorage and IndexedDB; device contact sync is not used in the same way as on Android.
14. Changes
We may update this Privacy Policy. We will change the effective date at the top and, where appropriate, show a notice in the app. Continued use after the new date means you accept the update, except where the law requires explicit consent for a specific change.
