Part A — Data retention
A1. Purpose
This document explains how long we keep categories of information related to Splittr and why. It supplements the Privacy Policy.
A2. Principles
1. Minimisation — We keep data only as long as needed for the purposes in the Privacy Policy or as law requires.
2. Deletion — When retention ends, we delete or anonymise personal data unless a legal exception applies.
3. Backups — Live deletion may take additional time to disappear from encrypted backups that rotate on a rolling schedule through our hosting providers.
4. Review — We review retention when we materially change how the App works.
A3. Retention overview
Google-linked account — While the account exists in our authentication and user systems; after a completed deletion request, removal from our live database follows as our account processes allow, subject to backup lag.
Profile data — Display name, email, and photo as provided through Google Sign-In, plus phone number and home currency, while the account exists.
Groups, friends, expenses, and settlements — Group membership, friend relationships, expenses, splits, settlements, balances, activity events, and in-app notifications while the related account and shared records exist; removed or dissociated when accounts are deleted as our backend allows, subject to shared-group records that other users still need.
Contact discovery data — Retained while needed to provide discovery and for security and abuse prevention, and while linked to an active account process, subject to our cleanup practices.
Device-only data — Until you clear site or app data, uninstall, or the OS clears storage (tokens, caches, IndexedDB feed snapshots, Preferences, offline outbox).
Legal or dispute holds — Until the matter is closed, overriding normal schedules.
A4. Our backend (high level)
We host account and app data on our Splittr backend (API and database). Signed-in users have a profile linked to Google authentication, a phone number, and related expense-splitting records (groups, friends, expenses, settlements, activity, notifications). Contact discovery may store normalized contact details used to match other Splittr users. Exact technical implementation may evolve; categories above stay accurate.
A5. Google services
Google Sign-In and Google Play retain data under Google’s privacy policy: https://policies.google.com/privacy. We do not run Google’s servers. You can use Google account and device settings to manage some Google-side uses.
A6. Local storage (browser / Android)
Browser: localStorage, IndexedDB, and similar APIs hold auth tokens, caches, feed snapshots, and offline write queues. Android: app sandbox storage and Capacitor Preferences for the same kinds of data. Retention is until you clear data, sign out (where the App clears local caches), or uninstall.
A7. Backups and logs
Our hosting providers and Google may retain backups and infrastructure logs for periods defined in their documentation. Deleted live data may persist in backup snapshots until those snapshots expire.
Part B — GDPR (EEA / UK)
B1. When GDPR applies
If you are in the EEA or UK and use Splittr, the GDPR (or UK GDPR) may apply. Product Info Digital is the controller for personal data described in the Privacy Policy.
Processors include our hosting and infrastructure providers for the Splittr API and database, and Google (Sign-In / Identity and Play), under their respective terms.
B2. Legal bases (Article 6)
We rely on contract (provide the App), legitimate interests (security, anti-abuse, reliability), consent where required (for example Android contacts permission), and legal obligation where applicable.
We do not process special categories of data (health, biometrics) as part of the App—do not put such data in expense descriptions or other free-text fields.
B3. Your rights
You may have rights to access, rectification, erasure, restriction, object, data portability, and complaint to a supervisory authority. To exercise any right, use only the developer contact details published for Splittr on Google Play. We respond within one month where possible, or inform you of an extension as allowed by law. We verify identity before acting (for example matching your Google account email).
Supervisory authorities: EU DPAs · UK ICO
B4. Erasure
Account deletion may remove linked profile, expense, group, friend, activity, and notification data from our live systems as our backend allows. Shared records that other users still need may be retained in anonymised or dissociated form where required to keep their history intact. Backup copies may linger until rotated. Google may retain its own authentication and Play records under Google’s policies.
B5. Automated decisions
We do not use automated processing that produces legal or similarly significant effects on you under Article 22 GDPR. Balance calculations and sync jobs are operational and not that kind of decision.
B6. International transfers
Data may be processed in India, the US, the EEA, or elsewhere where we or our processors (including Google) operate. We rely on appropriate safeguards (e.g. Standard Contractual Clauses) as required, as described in those companies’ documentation.
B7. Children
The App is not directed at children under 13. See the Privacy Policy for age and parental points.
B8. Records of processing
We maintain internal records of processing activities as required for our role as controller.
