April 5, 2016: Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant signs a bill allowing private businesses and religious groups to deny services to LGBTQ+ people. The law is later blocked by federal judge Carlton W. Reeves.
April 13, 2016: Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards signs an order banning discrimination against the LGBT community. The order reverses the policies of his predecessor, Bobby Jindal, who signed laws limiting same-sex marriage and the ability of transgender people to use the public restrooms of their choice.
May 4, 2016: The Department of Justice informs North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory that a new state law limiting restroom access for transgender people violates the Civil Rights Act of 1964. It demands a response by May 9 on whether the state will correct the violations.
