Picture books are a great way to introduce pre-literacy skills to your child! As you read, keep these ideas in mind:
Before you open the book, point out the title and the author's name
Model language such as "turn the page!" as you read
Use your finger to point at the words as you read - this will draw your child's attention to the printed words and emphasize the way that we read from left to right
Stop periodically to talk about what you've read - ask your child questions and give them time to ask you questions!
January 20th is National Penguin Day! Learn about these unique animals with these relatable and beautifully illustrated books:
Little Penguin and the Lollipop - A story about upsetting your friends, and how you can fix it. Great for social-emotional learning!
Penguin and Pinecone - A friendship story full of good adjectives and verbs!
If You Were a Penguin - this story has beautiful illustrations and is full of information about penguins. Your early readers will love this one!
Gingerbread Man & Gingerbread Baby
We all love the story of the Gingerbread Man so consider adding Gingerbread Baby to your list of books for December. This exciting book by Jan Brett follows a similar theme with the gingerbread cookie trying his best to avoid being eaten by several different characters. This is the perfect opportunity to practice comparing and contrasting story books. Other targeted goals include: sequencing, predicting, imitating motions, fill-in-the-blank phrases, and describing.
