In the wedge formation, the correct rank order is from the right to the left, as viewed from the standpoint of the host.

In the shoulder to shoulder formation, the correct rank order is from the left to the right, as viewed from the standpoint of the units peforming the formation. 

In the inverted wedge formation, the correct rank order is the same as during the wedge formation, but in front of the host. 

In the single file line formation, the correct rank order is from the highest-ranked unit standing in front to the lowest-ranked unit at the end of the line.
