Used to introduce a statement, often to express an opinion, a feeling, or a point that may be slightly tangential or needs emphasis. It is used in both informal and professional contexts to introduce a comment.
Can I just say…?”- used when we want to slide in a comment without sounding too pushy. Here’s how people typically use it:
1. To gently interrupt or add a point
You’re signaling, “I know I’m cutting in, but I promise it’s quick.”
“Can I just say, that was an amazing presentation?”
2. To soften criticism
It cushions what might otherwise sound blunt.
“Can I just say, the ending of that film made no sense?”
3. To emphasize your personal opinion
It gives your comment a bit of “this is just me talking.”
“Can I just say, I love that jacket on you?”
4. To express surprise or disbelief
Often with a slightly dramatic flair.
“Can I just say… what on earth was that?”
