EL VERBO SER / VERB TO BE

In the very first lesson, we learn to introduce ourselves in Spanish. We use two important verbs: the verb "ser", to say your name and where you are from and your occupation, and the verb "vivir", to say where you live.

CONVERSACIÓN (two classmates)

This is how you introduce yourself in a conversation. Notice how we use the verb ser:

• Yo soy: I am

• Tú eres: You are 

Ayleen: Hola, mi nombre es Ayleen.

Carla: Hola, Ayleen. Yo soy Carla.

Ayleen:  Mucho gusto.

Carla: Gusto en conocerte también.

Ayleen: : ¿Eres de aquí?

Carla: No, soy de Estados Unidos (país o ciudad).

CONVERSACIÓN (student-teacher)

Profesora: Hola, mi nombre es Ayleen. Soy tu profesora de español.

Alumna: Hola, Ayleen. Yo soy Karina.

Profesora: Mucho gusto, Karina.

Alumna: Gusto en conocerte también.

Profesora: ¿De dónde eres? (Where are you from?)

Alumna: Soy de los Estados Unidos (país o ciudad).

The teacher says "gusto en conocerte", which means “Nice to meet you”. We can say this in 3 different ways:

• Gusto en conocerte

• Mucho gusto

• Encantado (if the speaker is male)

• Encantada (if the speaker is female)

OMISIÓN DEL PRONOMBRE / OMISSION OF PRONOUNS

In Spanish, it's not necessary to use the pronouns "I, you, he, she, we, you, they", you can just use the verb! This is very different from the English language, where you need to use the pronouns at all times. In English it'd be incorrect to say "am Ayleen", we have to say "I am Ayleen". Think of it this way, saying "I" or "you" is not necessary in Spanish.

• Yo soy = Soy

• Tú eres = Eres

Memorize the following common verbs used in a class, they will be used in your live classes by your teacher to give you instructions. 

• Tipea - type

• Repite - repeat

• Escucha - listen

• Deletrea - spell

• Pregunta - ask

• Señala - point

• Lee - read

• Mira - watch

Useful questions that you will want to ask in class:

• ¿Cómo se dice ______(English word)? (How do you say ______?)

Alumno: ¿Cómo se dice "house"?

Profesor: House se dice "casa" en español.

• ¿Qué significa ______(Spanish word)? (What does______mean?)

Alumno: ¿Qué significa "mucho gusto"?

Profesor: "Mucho gusto" significa "nice to meet you".

• ¿Alguna pregunta? (any questions)

SALUDOS / GREETINGS

A: ¿Cómo estás?

B: 😀 Muy bien, ¿y tú?

A: ¿Qué tal?
