Elevator Magic is a great story to teach your superhero students subtraction. As the elevator drops the subtraction starts. There are surprises everytime the elevator doors open. What do you think he'll see? This helps students start practicing their subtraction problems.
Pete the Cat and his friends are planning on a party, but some of the cupcakes for the party go missing. Students will learn and be able to practice subtraction skills with Pete and his friends to find how many of the cupcakes went missing.
For advanced math learners, One Is a Snail Ten Is a Crab, provides the perfect practice. All animals on the beach have fun together counting and multiplying combinations using feet large and small from one to one hundred.
In 12 Ways to Get to 11, students will learn counting through decomposing and different ways of breaking down the number 11. Your superhero students will be able to practice this with numbers other than 11.
In Mission Addition, Miss Prime treats her students as math detectives. They learn the tools needed to solve addition problems. Your superhero student can become detectives themselves by practicing their basic addition as well as practicing inventing their own word problems.
Activities
Domino Addition
In this activity, students will create number sentences using the numbers on the dominos. For students that need more of a challenge, they can also practice subtraction. They can also start out with the number sentence and draw a domino that would match.
Subtraction Smash
This is a fun activity to practice subtraction problems. Following the number sentence, students will place how many balls they need to start with. They then determine how many needs to be taken away by smashing them.
Pom Pom Addition
This is a great activity to practice decomposing as well as practicing how many different ways to get to a number. Different colored pom poms can be used as different parts of a number sentence.
Paper Plate Addition
Students will roll a dice to determine the first addend and will roll the dice again to determine the second addend. Then you add the two together on the bottom portion of the plate. It can be done over and over and even be done with subtraction.
Ten Frame Addition
Using two egg cartons students can practice combining two numbers together. Pom poms or other small objects can be used as the counters. This can be done over and over again.
