This week, you do not have any reading so I am asking you to engage with the course in a different way. Peruse the course sites, introduction videos. As you acclimate to the course, keep track of your first impressions.
First impression happen quickly and outside our awareness most of the time. They tend to shape the way you think about and understand the events, people, and things around you. They are often based on associations you make with other things and experiences in your life.
For your CEA, you will be observe me, your instructor. All things are fair game: my appearance, clothing, tone of voice, things in the background of my recording space, my course website, the things I assign, the jokes I make, my music selection, anything you can observe.
Take notes of these observations. After that, make inferences or assumptions about the kind of person you think I am (your first impression of me,) my likes, dislikes, etc. based on those observations you made. All assumptions are acceptable. The wilder, the more fun this will be. Make sure to connect the observation to the assumption. If you assume that I had a tumblr phase in 2008, tell me why you think that.
Important note! This is gonna be weird. And it is not going to make sense until later. Just trust me. Also, it is important to know that this is not about me. I will not be offended by anything you write about me. The reason that you are focusing on me is that I don't want to subject any of your classmates to this awkwardness and to feeling this vulnerable. I am accustomed to the crushing darkness of awkwardness and it is not a problem for me to put myself into a vulnerable situation. I do this exercise every year. Nothing surprises me anymore. Go nuts.
