"Kids do well if they can"
(Ross Greene)
This is the single most powerful and game changing resource for me as a parent, a teacher, and a learning support teacher. Ross Greene shatters the theory that behaviour is something to be modified and shifts the lens from power & control to empathy, collaboration, and problem solving through 5 big ideas, or paradigm shifts:
The emphasis is on problems (and solving them) rather than on behaviours and modifying them - behaviours are indicative of lagging skills to respond adaptively to expectations.
Problem solving is collaborative, not unilateral - it is a process which the student takes responsibility and is being held accountable.
Problem solving is proactive, not reactive - once unsolved problems are identified proactive interventions are discussed (not in the heat of the moment) rather than reactive responses to manage a crisis.
Kids do well if they can - potentially the most difficult thing for adults to remember is that if kids could do well, they would do well. They don't require motivation; they require skill development.
Doing well is preferable - nobody wants to do poorly; however, we all look bad when we are lacking the skills to look good.
The CPS model:
honours the developmental nature of the adolescent brain.
supports the theory of Self-Determination by meeting the basic psychological needs of autonomy, relatedness, and competence.
Supports trauma informed practices in schools.
provides resources, training, guidance, and support for implementation.
offers a practical, value added, alternative to disciplinary practices that create shame, blame, and conflict and that truly make a difference in the lives of adolescents.

Building upon the foundations of Wahkohtowin, "Restorative Practices are a framework for building community and for responding to challenging behavior through authentic dialogue, coming to understanding, and making things right".
Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is an evidence-based three-tiered framework to improve and integrate all of the data, systems, and practices affecting student outcomes every day. PBIS creates schools where all students succeed.
