Jack Rabbit Filly
Food – 9/10
Some restaurants try to do everything. Jack Rabbit Filly takes the opposite approach: a smaller menu, executed with confidence and precision. Instead of overwhelming you with choices, they focus on doing a handful of dishes exceptionally well—and it shows.
I ordered the Soy Garlic Karaage-Don Combo Bowl, which came with a vegetable spring roll and a side of miso soup.
Let's start with the miso soup because it deserves its own spotlight. This soup was absolutely ridiculous—in the best way possible. It had the perfect balance of savory flavors with just the right touch of salt. Every time I thought I had taken my last sip, I found myself going back for "just one more." It was comforting, flavorful, and somehow managed to steal attention from the main course.
The vegetable spring roll followed up nicely. The wrapper was light, crispy, and fried to perfection without feeling greasy. Inside, the vegetables tasted fresh and vibrant. Paired with the spicy chili sauce, it transformed from a simple appetizer into something that kept me reaching for another bite.
Then came the star of the show: the Soy Garlic Karaage-Don Bowl.
Loaded with Japanese fried chicken chunks, a soft egg, shaved cabbage, honey garlic soy sauce, and jasmine rice, this bowl was a flavor-packed masterpiece. The chicken was juicy, tender, and perfectly cooked. The rice soaked up all that delicious sauce, while the cabbage added freshness and texture. Somewhere in the mix was a subtle kick of spice that elevated the entire dish. It wasn't overwhelming or mouth-burning—it simply enhanced every bite and left me wanting more.
The only miss for me was the scallion pancake. I sampled a small piece, and the texture and flavor just weren't my thing. That's more personal preference than a criticism of the dish itself, and it certainly wasn't enough to impact the overall food score.
Service – 8/10
I visited during the middle of the lunch rush, and the place was packed.
Despite the crowd, we were seated almost immediately. Our waitress struck the perfect balance between being attentive and giving us enough space to figure out the menu as first-time visitors. She was friendly, welcoming, and never made us feel rushed.
What impressed me most was how efficiently the restaurant operated. Even with a full house, our food arrived much quicker than expected. The staff worked together seamlessly, keeping things moving without sacrificing hospitality. It's clear they have lunch service down to a science.
Vibe – 9/10
Jack Rabbit Filly nails the modern neighborhood restaurant feel.
The space was clean, stylish, and thoughtfully designed. It has an intimate atmosphere without feeling cramped. There was a steady buzz of conversation throughout the restaurant that gave it energy and personality while still allowing for easy conversation at your table.
One thing I appreciated was the spacing between tables. You never felt like you were dining with the strangers sitting next to you.
The seating consists of wooden chairs and tables. They're not exactly designed for lounging around all afternoon, but they're perfectly fine for a lunch outing. Besides, when the food is this good, you're focused on your meal anyway.
Cost Effectiveness – 9/10
For around $20, the combo delivers tremendous value.
The portion size is generous, and unless you arrive absolutely starving, there's a good chance you'll be taking some home. The best part? The leftovers were just as incredible the next day. In fact, they might have been even better after the flavors had time to mingle overnight.
Getting two meals out of one order is always a win in my book.
Amenities – 7/10
This score has less to do with the restaurant itself and more to do with the location.
Jack Rabbit Filly sits in the heart of the ever-popular Park Circle area. While that's great for atmosphere and foot traffic, it can make parking a challenge. I ended up parking about three blocks away and walking to the restaurant.
Not a deal-breaker, but definitely something to keep in mind if you're visiting during peak hours.
Final Verdict – 8.4/10 ⭐⭐⭐⭐
I originally heard about Jack Rabbit Filly because the owner competed on Top Chef, and my thought process was simple: "How bad could it be?"
The answer? Not bad at all. In fact, it was outstanding.
The restaurant was absolutely packed during lunch, which is usually a good sign, and it lived up to the hype. The atmosphere was lively and energetic while still feeling relaxed and comfortable. The service was friendly, efficient, and professional from start to finish.
Most importantly, the food was fantastic. The karaage bowl delivered big flavors, the spring roll was excellent, and the miso soup was unforgettable. Add in generous portions that provide leftovers for the next day, and you've got a restaurant that offers both quality and value.
If you're in the Charleston area and looking for a meal that's packed with flavor, personality, and heart, Jack Rabbit Filly deserves a spot near the top of your must-visit list. It’s the kind of place that has you planning your next visit before you've even finished your first meal. 🍜🐇
