Simulation Centre

All courses take place at the University of Cape Town - CEHI Simulated Ophthalmic Surgery (SOS) Training Unit at Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town, South Africa. 

The unit consists of six Zeiss microscopes with viewing cameras integrated into a local Wi-Fi network, which facilitates tutor observation and feedback. Students are able to record and review their surgery and analyse each step of their training.

There are a further four overhead microscopes used for phaco training, and two are fitted with indirect viewing systems for PPV training. The Eyesi® simulator complements the training unit providing virtual reality training and scoring of surgical manoeuvres. 

Three additional phaco stations will increase capacity later this year.
