Game Design
Game Design
Learnt about the various considerations and areas in video games such as replayability, motivation of player and mechanism as well as their implementation in video games through research on various video games in various genres. Topics including player behaviors and factors affecting implementation in the video game are also taught as part of game design.
Project Deliverables:
Paper Prototype and Presentation on Gameplay Research.
Storyline and World Map
Design at least 2 game levels excluding tutorial levels.
Left Column: screenshots of research on video games and statistics.
Right Column: Presentation video about research conducted.
Redesigned based on the two games that were critiqued.
Improvements include:
More convenient movement controls.
Player has more health due to lives system.
My recorded presentation of the playthrough of the prototype.
Learnt how to use the 3 Act structure to create a storyline.
Designed a world map based on the story and showed details regarding enemies
Lastly, created 2 game levels which needs to incorporate finer details of the story and world map.
Outcome of the Project:
A redesigned and improved 2D or 2.5D game that is based on one of the researched games.
What I learnt from the project:
There were many things I learnt from the project regarding game design. Firstly, I learnt how to do research on games and do a gameplay pitch along paper prototypes. This would help me in the future as I move into the workplace and present my game idea to my boss. Next, the project was an eye-opener as I learnt about the many considerations that take place as game levels are designed. For example, considerations regarding the difficulty of the level which can be adjusted using various factors such as the number of enemies in a group. In addition, I also learnt about the motivations of players and how to motivate players to continue playing a game.
