Hypertension has long been a pressing health concern in the barangay. The indicators outlined below highlight the severity of the issue, making it clear that urgent and sustained efforts are needed to address this growing problem and protect the well-being of the community.
Due to its pressing concern, the team Layag Lindang aims to reduce the prevalence of elevated blood pressure from 38% to 20% among residents aged 20 years and above in Barangay Lindang by the year 2027. Thus, the following intervention plans are made:
Hypertension ranks as the 1st cause of morbidity in the barangay as of 2023.
Three reported mortalities in the year 2024 due to acute myocardial infarction (the second leading cause of mortality in 2023) caused by chronic hypertension.
As of 2024, there are a total of 63 diagnosed hypertensive residents in the barangay.
As of 2024, only 5 residents with hypertension undergo monthly blood pressure monitoring.
The barangay health station is inadequately equipped for blood pressure monitoring as its stethoscope and sphygmomanometer are nonfunctional.
As of 2024, blood pressure measurements of 315 residents aged 20 years old and above revealed:
119 (37.78%) residents have elevated blood pressure:
82 (68.91%)had no prior diagnosis of hypertension.
5 are 30 years old and below.
10 are 40 years old and below.
16 are 50 years old and below.
14 are 60 years old and below.
37 are above the age of 60.
37 (31.09%) are those with known hypertension.
As of 2024, risk assessment of residents 20 years old and above identified multiple factors contributing to an increased risk of hypertension.
Out of 235 individuals, 32 (13.6%) have a family history of hypertension.
Out of 235 individuals, 80 (34.04%) are overweight, 15 (6.38%) are obese class 1, and 1 is classified as obese class 2.
Out of 232 individuals, 105 (44.7%) have a waist circumference above normal standard.
Out of 232 individuals, 57 (24.4%) are smokers.
Out of 232 individuals, 103 (43.4%) are alcoholic drinkers, 16 (6.8%) of which are regular drinkers.
Out of 232 individuals, 73 (31%) consume more than the WHO recommended dose of sodium consumption per day.
Among the 63 diagnosed hypertensive residents, 18 (28.5%) do not take maintenance medications, and 11 (24.4%) among the 45 hypertensive residents taking maintenance medication have poor compliance with a Morisky Medication Adherence scale of 0 and 1.
None of the residents utilize the proper herbal plants as management and adjuncts for treatment of hypertension.
Out of 45 hypertensive individuals on maintenance medication, 26 (57.77%) had uncontrolled blood pressure readings on two separate occasions despite taking antihypertensive medications.
🛑1st Objective: Enhance the availability and accessibility of resources for hypertension management.
Team Layag Lindang, in partnership with the RHU NCD coordinator, has laid the groundwork for improving access to essential medications and supplies in the barangay. Set for implementation in January 2026, this initiative includes the establishment of a Barangay Health Board responsible for overseeing the procurement of necessary equipment and supplies for the Barangay Health Station. A comprehensive inventory of needed and currently available items will be conducted, followed by the formal approval of the proposed health board to ensure the efficient and sustainable delivery of healthcare services.
🛑2nd Objective: Increase the knowledge of hypertensive individuals regarding pharmacological and nonpharmacological management of hypertension and the importance of adherence to maintenance medications.
ALAGANG PUSO 🩷 (July 1 & 4, 2025)
Alagang Puso is a seminar led by Team Layag Lindang on the importance of proper monitoring and adherence to maintenance medications for hypertension. It was conducted for 63 residents with known hypertension, with the goal of improving awareness and promoting better health practices.
With the aid of the Lindang NCD officer and the Municipal Health Office (MHO), the event was a success. Among the 58 participants who attended, a significant increase in post-test scores compared to pre-test results showed improved understanding and learning.
HERB-MAZING 🌿 (July 1 & 4, 2025)
Herbmazing is an 2-day educational session led by Team Layag Lindang focusing on the Department of Health (DOH)-approved 10 medicinal plants, their proper uses, and correct methods of preparation. This informative activity aimed to promote safe, affordable, and accessible alternatives for managing common health conditions using traditional herbal remedies.
A total of 101 participants attended the session, actively engaging in discussions and hands-on demonstrations. Based on the results of the pre- and post-tests conducted, there was a significant increase in participants’ knowledge, reflecting improved understanding of how to properly identify, prepare, and use the medicinal plants in their daily lives.
This initiative is especially helpful in rural communities like Barangay Lindang, where access to medical care may be limited. It empowers residents with practical knowledge on natural health solutions, reinforces culturally relevant practices, and supports preventive healthcare at the grassroots level.
🛑3rd Objective: Improve the capacity of BHWs in monitoring blood pressure and addressing non-adherence to hypertension medications.
BP WORKSHOP ✏️(July 2, 2025)
A Blood Pressure Monitoring Workshop was conducted in collaboration with the municipal nurse from the Rural Health Unit (RHU) to train and capacitate the six Barangay Health Workers (BHWs) of Barangay Lindang. The workshop focused on equipping them with proper techniques and skills in accurate blood pressure measurement. This initiative not only ensures that the community can rely on their BHWs for basic health monitoring, but also empowers the BHWs with the confidence and competence to carry out their roles effectively.
All six BHWs successfully passed the return demonstration with flying colors, proving their readiness to serve their community with skill and dedication.
Along with this, an infographic on how to properly take blood pressure is placed at the Barangay Health Station to serve as a quick reference and visual guide for both BHWs and community members.
🛑4th Objective: Raise the awareness of residents 20 years old and above about the risks of hypertension associated with unhealthy lifestyle practices.
LINDANCE ZUMBA CLUB 👯 (July, 2025)
The LINDANCE Zumba Club was formed with 8 active members to provide residents of Barangay Lindang with a fun, accessible, and consistent way to stay active and healthy. Open to all ages, the club offers Zumba sessions three times a week, creating a space not only for physical activity but also for community bonding and stress relief.
By promoting regular participation, the initiative aims to help residents build the habit of exercising the recommended amount per week—supporting heart health, improving mood, and enhancing overall well-being. More than just a fitness activity, Lindance Zumba Club is a movement toward a healthier, happier, and more connected barangay.
