Unit 0:
FUNdamentals
1st Big Idea: Scientists and engineers work methodically and collaboratively to answer questions and/or solve problems.
Task:
As a class: Watch the commercial - what is her claim?
Individually: Write down the pieces of evidence mentioned to support the claim.
As a group: Examine each piece of evidence mentioned and determine if it supports the claim or not.
As a group: Upon examining the evidence, think critically about why each piece of evidence justifies her claim. In other words, why would “speaking a weird language” or “drinking green stuff” justify the claim that her dad is an alien?
Learning Goal #1: Develop an understanding of positive group collaboration & the benefits of working as a team member.
Assessment: Self-Evaluation
Guiding Questions:
What does it mean to collaborate positively?
What are 3-5 benefits of working in teams?
What science activities have required group work?
How have you contributed positively in those activities?
Learning Goal #2: Develop an understanding of scientific practices to accurately investigate a scientific question.
Assessment: Peer evaluation of "The Tower".
Guiding Questions
What are the 8 Science & Engineering Practices?
What is the Scientific Method?
How are the practices used in the scientific method?
Resources
Glencoe Virtual Lab: How is a controlled experiment performed?
Learning Goal #3: Use engineering practices to solve a design problem.
Assessment: Unit Quiz
Guiding Questions:
