ADOPTING HEALTHIER HABITS
INTRODUCTION
In this webquest, students will embark on a journey to discover and adopt healthier habits that can positively impact on their well-being. Through engaging tasks and online exploration, they will explore various aspects of healthy living and develop strategies to incorporate these habits into their daily lives. The final goal of this webquest is for students to create a presentation on Canva, Genially or Powerpoint. Students will be visiting other forms in secondary school as a way of promoting a healthier lifestyle and encourage others to make changes that are within our grasp.
TASKS
The tasks include to carry out research on how to carry on healthier habits. Students will read articles, watch videos, use internet websites and tools such as Jamboard, Mindmap generators and dictionaries to expand and interconnect their knowledge. The final task will include a collaborative presentation to be shared with other classes in the future.
PROCESS
Lesson 1
1) Watch the following video "How To Improve Your Sleep". In groups of four, discuss and answer the following questions on your notebook or a google document:
How does alcohol affect your sleep?
What are some of the physical consequences of sleep deprivation?
Is it possible to get back the sleep that we were deprived of? Explain why or why not
How many hours should we sleep per day?
Identify 2 suggestions from the video. What is the importance of adopting them into your daily life?
2) Read the following article "Make exercise a daily habit – 10 tips". Then, in groups, summarize what you just read on a collaborative Jamboard. The product should look like this. This summary will later come in handy to create the final presentation.
Lesson 2
1) Read the following article “HOW DOES EATING HEALTHY AFFECT YOUR LIFE?”. Write brief notes (bullet points) on different aspects of the article that caught you rattention or that you believe are worth mentioning in the powerpoint presentation to be shared with other classes. You can also highlight new vocabulary or phrases you are not acquainted with and check meaning and further examples by visiting the Oxford Learners Dictionary
After discussion, will write a collaborative summary on the board.
2) By compiling information sourced from the web about sleep, nutrition, and physical activity, it's time to generate a mind map using MindMeister. This map has to llustrate the relationships between these three concepts, aiming to shed some light on their interconnections and demonstrate the various manners in which they foster healthier habits. Hands on!
Lesson 3 - Integration
Students will create a powerpoint presentation on Canva, Genially or Google Slides. They will use all the information they gathered from the web, and they will specially base the presentation on the mindmap, where they not only have a summary of the information but the connections between eating, sleeping and exercising. Students will be divided in groups of three or four people. Each group will be in charge of a specific section.
EVALUATION
Self-Assessment: Did you find the project enjoyable? What aspects did you particularly appreciate? Are there specific elements of this project that you would consider changing? What new knowledge or insights have you gained? In your opinion, does the collaborative end product hold value for other students at school?
