Lesson 1: Exploring the benefits of yoga
Level: Intermediate
Age Group: 17-year-old teenagers
Objective: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to discuss and describe the benefits of yoga. Additionally, they will create an infographic summarising the discussion.
Warmer
Begin the lesson by showing an image of someone practising yoga on the whiteboard or projector screen. Ask the students to discuss with a partner: "Have you ever tried yoga? What do you know about it? What do you think can be the benefits of this practise?” Write their responses and predictions on the board.
Web
At this stage, students will watch the following video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cvQn6Pzxnto to check their predictions against it. After watching the video, provide a list of questions related to the video content. These questions should focus on the benefits of yoga. For example:
-How does yoga help with stress and relaxation?
-How can yoga improve flexibility and balance?
-What are some mental benefits of practising yoga?
- How can it help people reduce stress?
As a whole class, share their responses and write down key vocabulary related to yoga on the board.
What’s next
Students will be divided into four groups. Each group will select one question from the previous stage to develop and expand on. They can look for further information at https://www.yogajournal.com/ and https://www.health.harvard.edu/staying-healthy/yoga-benefits-beyond-the-mat
Once they gathered further information, each group will create an infographic on www.infogram.com or www.canva.com. These can be hung in the halls to share more information about this practice and how beneficial it can be.
Lesson 2: Food choices and their impact on health
Age Group: 17-year-old teenagers
Level: Intermediate
Objective: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to discuss healthier food choices and be aware of the impact it has on the human body.
Warmer
Begin the lesson by showing images of various foods on the whiteboard or projector screen, including examples of healthy and junk foods.
Ask the students to work in pairs and identify which foods they think are healthy and which are junk foods. Classify foods on a chart.
(As a whole class, discuss their choices and list the foods under the appropriate categories on the board.)
Web
Give sts the following article to read https://lifelinechiropractic.org/eating-healthy-affect-life/ “HOW DOES EATING HEALTHY AFFECT YOUR LIFE?”
Sts will write brief notes (bullet points) on different aspects of the article that caught their attention or that they found interesting/worth mentioning. Then, we will have a class discussion on their notes.
In pairs, students read the text, underline new vocabulary or phrases, and discuss the main points. Stds can look up words and new vocabulary on https://www.oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com/
What’s next
Divide the students into five groups, each will deal with an area of impact (overall health, mood, weight maintenance, energy and disease prevention).
Encourage them to use vocabulary from the previous article. Each small group will create a mindmap on Padlet with the topic assigned in the centre, and arrows leading to related terms or ideas connected to the topic. The mindmap will be shared on screen and each group will expand on the mindmap orally.
