When you first think of Microsoft PowerPoint you probably don't think of it for creating images. It's a presentation tool! But you have the option to change the slide size, making this program more versatile than you maybe ever thought before.
To ensure that your banner image will appear as the appropriate size in Canvas we will first need to change the slide size in PowerPoint.
Open a new PowerPoint presentation, click on the Design tab and then on Slide Size.
From the slide size menu, choose Custom Slide Size
From the drop down menu, select Banner and then click the OK button.
You may be asked to choose how you would like to scale you slide, maximize or ensure fit. I typically choose ensure fit but have provided some information below about each option to help you make your decision.
Maximize: Select this option to increase the size of your slide content when you are scaling to a larger slide size. Choosing this option could result in your content not fitting on the slide.
Ensure Fit: Select this option to decrease the size of your content when scaling to a smaller slide size. This could make your content appear smaller, but you’ll be able to see all content on your slide.
Your PowerPoint presentation has now been sized appropriately for you to start creating your course banner design.
Now that you have your custom slide size chosen you can start to design your banner. Consider the Themes and Variants available from the Design tab as they work well for templates when first designing your banner.
In the example, I used the Frame Theme and made changes to the colors in the variant options.
Click the File button and then select Save As from the menu.
Choose where you would like to save your files.
Use the drop down menu to select a different file format during the saving process and choose to save the file as an image (JPEG or PNG format).
* I strongly suggest first saving the file as a PowerPoint presentation, in case you would like to make changes in the future.
