In order to understand why you are looking at the texts you are, it is important to understand what social justice is. According to Pachamama Alliance, social justice is defined as, "the equal access to wealth, opportunities, and privileges within a society". They suggest that social justice orginated as a way to address the economic gap between the wealthy and poor but now it has expanded to include all aspects of social life. This means that any issues that concern inequality in society, could be a social justice issue.
Of course, we are all unique individuals and we experience the world differently through our different cultural and social experiences and identities. This means that the most important social justice issue for you might not be the most important for someone else depending on your beliefs, values and experiences. Also, each social justice issue is not always independent in and of itself. For example, racism is a social justice issue but racism presenting differently for men and women creates another dynamic of social justice. This can be explained through intersectionality. The Oxford dictionary defines this as, "the interconnected nature of social categorizations such as race, class, and gender as they apply to a given individual or group, regarded as creating overlapping and interdependent systems of discrimination or disadvantage". The way you experience the world, including inequality in the world, depends a lot on your social categorizations.
When you're reading through the texts and watching the videos, keep in mind that even though each section is broken up into a specific topic (e.g. racism) there could be overlapping elements from other areas influencing the pieces as well.
Here's a quick, fun video of Kid President telling us how to change the world because each individual can make a difference to eliminate inequality in society!
As you are working through this unit, think about how you can make a difference.
