This unit will focus on social justice as a big topic and the understanding about the topic comes from reading and viewing many different pieces of literature and videos!

I hope you enjoy learning and reading about social justice!
In this unit, you will be engaging with "Social Justice" as a big idea. You will be learning what social justice is and how literature can often give a voice to oppressed groups or influence the way that we interact with others.
By the end of the unit, you should:
understand what social justice is
be able to explain how identity experiences shape perceptions and experiences of the world
identify how social justice is represented in literature and media and how these forms of media can be used as a tool for sharing experiences and serving a particular purpose, such as to enlighten others to inequalities in society
be able to critically analyze texts and understand multiple perspectives in social justice issues
What knowledge should you take with you from this unit? You should understand that social justice issues are everyone's issues. You should recognize how equality presents itself in our society through actions and recognize how we can make a difference by being inclusive and welcoming towards others.
There are 7 lessons, or topics, for you to work through. You may look at lessons 1-6 in any particular order but lesson 7 should be completed last as a way to summarize and bring the unit together. The section, "Your Task", is your final assignment after you go through all 7 lessons.
How to navigate through the lessons:
First, read through the "What is Social Justice?" section of this website. This will provide you with a brief understanding of social justice. After this, move on to the lessons!
In each lesson, check the "before you begin" or "warm-up" activity first. Some lessons have activities for you to do and some have important information that you need to know in order to help you better understand the unit.
There are various texts and videos in each section for you to read and work through. Each of these have "guided questions" for you to answer. These should help you better understand and think critically about the readings.
At the bottom of each lesson, there is a "journal response" section. This is your assignment for each lesson. There are different styles of journal responses but each one will encourage you to think about the texts in the section. Make sure to make connections in your responses (text-text, text-self, text-world).
If you were completing this unit in class, there would be many opportunities to work with classmates, learn from each other and have discussions about the texts. However, for this online conversion of the unit, you will be asked to respond personally and critically to the texts through written responses.
Journal Response: After each lesson, there is a journal response task. This is for you to formulate your thoughts about what you've just read or watched. Each response should include your reflections on the texts, your own perceptions and ideas about the issue, any changes in your understanding of the issue and any questions you may still have on the issue.
Art Piece/Written Response: For this assignment, you will select one theme concerning issues of social justice from the works in this unit and will use this text, or texts, to highlight that theme by creating an artistic piece and writing a short explanation on your piece. You can create an artistic piece either physically or digitally and your written piece should include an explanation of your own beliefs and understanding on the theme you have chosen.
This unit meets a variety of outcomes for the NS English 12 curriculum.
