I know it's frustrating and scary when you need help in a class and feel alone. But rest assured, I am here for you! Provided that you maintain close contact with me throughout the course, I'll do my best to support you any way I can. Your peers are here to support you as well. We are all entering this course with different understandings of and experiences with sociology, feminism, and women's health. And remember, our own backgrounds, families, and philosophies inform the way we enter and interact in this class. Knowing this, we must all commit to respect each other and exercise patience and humility when some of us "get" things right away and others need a little more time to understand.
If you find that you are struggling to understand anything, please speak with me immediately and we will make arrangements to meet to go over the material more carefully. Please don't wait until you receive a poor grade to ask for help. Let's work together before that happens to ensure you succeed!
The topics we cover in this class will relate to your experiences in life. They will also lead to some lively and often controversial discussions. I LOVE controversy! I think it's fun, but more importantly, I believe we learn the most from people who don't share the same experiences, backgrounds, and opinions. Our lives are enriched and our world is expanded each time we take a moment to listen to someone else's story. It's important that we constantly step out of our own shoes to learn about who and what we don't know. I will be asking you to do this at all times during this class. It can be challenging, but we must make sure we all begin and stay at a place of respect for one another. In order for this class to be a brave learning space, we must agree to respect the variety of experiences, diversity of values, and the independence of thought each of us brings. This means we interact with one another with the intent not to offend, but to learn. Please be mindful of how your words may affect someone else and ask questions for clarification anytime you are unsure of another's intent. If there is anything that is concerning to you at any time, please let me know right away.

If you have a question about the course, please ask in Canvas, check the Online Services for Students, or email me. The key here is to contact me as soon as you have a question. Don't allow yourself to fall behind before seeking my help. I'm here to make sure you succeed, and I will be devastated if you don't, so please allow me to give you the support you need to earn the highest grade possible in this class.
