Workshop Program

Our program consists of two in-person half-day workshops and student activities in-between. Participants will get to know each other at the first workshop, which will be on 6/25, and they will form a small group to prepare short presentation after the first workshop. At the second workshop (8/30; tentative), each team will briefly present their work in the meantime. Participants must attend both workshops in-person, and are encouraged to meet group members regularly between the two workshops.

The first workshop focuses on exploration of various research fields in CS/DS/AI. The participants will have an opportunity to hear about various research areas (e.g., machine learning, computer vision, natural language processing, ambient AI, robotics, etc.) in data science and AI from the participating faculty members as well as current graduate students of GSDS. Then, they will form small groups based on research area of their interest . Students are encouraged to meet regularly until the second workshop to research about the area together (e.g., what the area actually studies in depth, why it is interesting and important, what difficulties it has, what preparation is needed to enter). Each team will present what they have learned from this research at the second workshop.

Each group will be assigned with a faculty advisor and a graduate student mentor, respectively, based on research interest. During the winter, the group is encouraged to meet regularly for study and for fun. Each group may decide what to do flexibly on their own; recommended activities may include group study (taking an online course or data science bootcamp together), paper reading, programming practice, a small project, research participation, and so on. Each group will present what they have done during the winter break at the second workshop.

The second workshop starts with group presentations for sharing experience and study during the Winter. Then, we explore various career paths as a CS/DS/AI researcher. We will have a number of mentors invited from various work environments and occupations (e.g., academia, industry research, national lab, software engineers, product managers), and will let the participants to mingle with and learn from them, as well as from peers. This workshop will run for half-day including a meal. Our tentative plan is as follows.
