My family proved that they could keep up with recording their waste. Now it was time to see if they could start to reduce it. Since the kitchen is where the most waste was created and disposed of I chose to focus the first week on it.
My mom is the one who buys all the food in the house so this was surely going to impact her the most. My family is also your typical American family in terms of schedule. Both of my parents work full time and my sister and I are both dancers. Between the two of us we are at the studio every day for several hours at a time. This doesn't allow for much down time which means we need to be able to make meals and snacks quickly (ie. prepackaged).
Bea Johnson had many recommendations, but I chose the ones that best suited my family. This includes:
I also made a new log as a way to try and relieve some hassle of logging the waste. This log includes categories for items based on the items I saw recorded in the baseline week.
Not all of my plan was accomplished but most of it was. The biggest problem that stopped completing all parts of the plan was time. As mentioned our busy schedules don't allow for time to do anything except what's already being done.

Within the first week we were able to cut the number of garbage bags in half this week by only throwing out TWO bags! No habits were made, but just by being conscious about what you're throwing out makes a huge difference. Having to record everything I think is what made my family be careful about the things they used. For example we went from throwing out 38 individual food wrappers to 13 and plastic bottles dropped from 11 to 2. Overall I was very pleased with week 1.
