My family is divided in terms of housekeeping and maintenance, so I thought it would be a good idea to work on this area while we were all home on winter vacation.
By now you know that there are four of us in our house. My mom does most of the household cleaning and I help out every now and then. My dad takes on the handyman type work when it's needed and my sister works to take care of her own things. Our house also isn't as clean as it could be again because of our schedules, but it's also not terrible so I was excited to see the difference this week would have.
Prior to this week we had already cleaned the house relatively well because my family hosts Christmas Eve, but now it was time to maintain the upkeep. Some things I wanted to try included:
In the beginning of this project my mom had actually gone out and bought microfiber cloths to use for cleaning and as replacements for paper towels and they work really well. I unexpectedly went away over break so I didn't have the time I thought I would to make my own soaps. As for bigger house projects we had to throw out a vacuum cleaner, but we made sure to do our research and buy a new one that was more reliable. My dad also replaced the ceiling in our downstairs area. We used to have tiles that we had to throw out, but now our new ones are wood so they can be recycled if they're ever replaced. I did get some more eco friendly cleaning products from Grove even thought this isn't necessarily related to waste, but they use bottles that can be recycled.
For the most part all the numbers continued to drop and we kept our garbage bag count to two. I could also start to see my family being more independent about the things they consumed and recognizing what would produce the least amount of waste.
