Like every good experiment, the researcher must have a baseline or control group to compare their data to. While I could have extended the testing periods to increase the accuracy, I did not want my family to become more annoyed with me than needed. I created charts and put them next to every garbage can in my house. I told my family to record the items they disposed of, identify if it was recycled or thrown away, and how many of these items were disposed of. By the end of the week the list in the kitchen had by far the most. My family had successfully completed the first week and disposed of a total of four garbage bags.
