1. Our Pilgrim Walk Towards the MPC 2026
Since 2016, The Catholic Bishops of Malaysia have been discussing, deliberating and
discerning with the faithful (Clergy, Religious and Laity) about the possibility and necessity
of the coming together of all 9 dioceses in Malaysia as the Catholic Church in Malaysia. The
Malaysia Pastoral Convention 2026 will be the first of its kind, an official gathering, similar in
importance to a Synod, for the Catholic Church in Malaysia.
The Journey towards the Malaysia Pastoral Convention 2026; otherwise known as MPC2026, begins with
the pastoral assemblies at the various levels. Beginning with a Parish Pastoral Assembly (PPA) followed
by a Diocesan Pastoral Assembly (DPA) and then a Regional Pastoral Assembly (RPA). Regions are known
as Sabah, Sarawak and Semenanjung, comprising 3 dioceses respectively. In addition to the mentioned
assembly, the journey includes the Malaysia Religious Assembly and the Malaysian Catholic Youth Day
which includes an assembly for young people within its itinerary. All the assemblies are culminating
towards the MPC 2026.
3. Engages Everyone
The journey or route taken by the salib in the respective dioceses will be facilitated by the
entrusted diocesan coordinating team, giving priority to the smaller and distant
communities from the centre of parochial life and diocese engagements. Learning from
John 4β5-30, sometimes the salib needs to be present in the most unexpected place in order
to facilitate an encounter.
The hope is also for the faithful with more access and from more established communities to walk with
the salib and make a pilgrimage to the selected gathering points, walking alongside, listening actively and
celebrating together.
The Perjalanan SALIB is aimed at expressing the importance of accompaniment beginning at the
grassroot level. The salib does not retain itself at a fixed point but it journeys to the faithful especially in
the peripheries.
4. A Long Walk Together
The Perjalanan SALIB is not to be treated as a relay, meaning that we, the faithful, are only to
be engaged when the salib is thereabouts at the selected gathering point tethered to our
parish community. We should treat the Perjalanan SALIB more like a triathlon, meaning that
we are using 3 modes of movement on the same and one journey.
The first mode of movement is communion. The movement of gathering together as a diverse community
rooted in the love and unity of the Trinity. Together, we encounter each other in respectful listening and to
discern communally, how to receive the salib grounded in the sensus fidei that we share.
This is how we prepare before the salib arrives to us.
The second mode of movement is participation. The movement of genuinely making the effort to ensure
the inclusion of those at the margins or who feel excluded. Together, the laity, consecrated and ordained,
acknowledge that all the faithful are qualified and called to serve each other through the gifts of the Holy
Spirit.
This is how we celebrate while the salib is with us.
5. A Sacred Sign
At national level, the Perjalanan SALIB 2025-2026 commences with the rite of solemn
blessing of the SALIB during the Malaysian Catholic Youth Day in April 2025 and concludes
during the Malaysia Pastoral Convention in September 2026. In the respective dioceses, the
journey will commence from May 2025 and conclude August 2026. The duration of stay for
the salib at the parishes or selected gathering points will be discerned by the Diocesan
Coordinating team.
Keeping with the spirit of Synodality, that is to be more inclusive rather than instructive, the National
coordinating team will provide suggestions and direction for implementation at diocesan or parish level
but it is at the discernment of the collaborators at each gathering point, on how the community will walk,
listen and celebrate the Perjalanan SALIB.
Through communal discernment, the coordinating teams both at diocesan and parish level will facilitate
opportunities for the faithful to journey intimately with God, to journey intimately with Self and to journey
intimately with the Other. These opportunities may be experienced and lived out either privately or publicly
in the family, among friends and neighbours, at the workplace, in the parish or interparish and in any lived
reality with the hope and desire for a true conversion.
6. A Local Design
The SALIB is a unique arrangement of 9 salibs together with a Corpus which forms into a
crucifix. During the Malaysian Catholic Youth Day in April 2025, the SALIB Malaysia will be
presented to the faithful for veneration before it is divided into its individual 9 salibs and
sent to the respective dioceses. We will witness the unification of the SALIB once again in
September 2026 during the Malaysia Pastoral Convention 2026.
The salib stands 9 feet tall and 5 feet wide, made of wood. The unique arrangements of the SALIB, while
irregular but still recognisable, reflects the characteristic of our dioceses in Malaysia. Each independent
but unites harmoniously in diversity. Both complementary and collaborative while still being dedicated
and preferential to its community.
The SALIB will also bear the decorative design of the Bunga Raya. A symbol of love for the birth of our
nation, a sign of our independence from foreign rule and unity among different races. Similarly, the Bunga
Raya on the SALIB symbolises the triumph of our Lord Jesus over the world and has reconciled us to the
Father and unites us with each other in the Holy Spirit.
