Students on the University of San Diego SCMA Silicon Valley Tech Tour - 6 factories with one night in San Francisco. Dr, Starling is back and left.
Below are 160 comments added to course, workshop and seminar evaluations from universities, private industry, and Roadmaps Institute. They have not been edited except to remove occasional names included and follow up contact information. I wish I had done a better job keeping the notes, letters, and evaluations of students over the years. So may wonderful students.
Material was thought provoking - especially the step charts.
The use of step charts (stretched my thinking).
It was the first time I really understood how to use them (step charts), and (I) did apply them at work.
Enjoyed the course and learned a lot about supplier development.
I am deficient in Supplier Development and this course helped learn how to start up a program,
I was able to learn from my classmates about their SD programs.
The course presented new ideas to (an) old topic.
The readings (contributed to my learning).
The discussion boards were very interesting.
Much learning (was) gained from instructor feedback to student discussion board postings
Discussion board topics were valuable to the learning process.
Great use of the discussion board.
Text was very good. (Note: book was World-Class Supplier Development by Starling)
No problems - it was clear in advance when assignments were due
It opened new horizons that I had previously not looked at. The experiences shared by other students and instructors were quite enlightening.
It was interesting hearing what others had to say. It made me think more about my company and what we are doing.
I have been engaged with e-Commerce for quite some time and this course challenged me to expand my understanding of the conceptual and technology aspects.
Topic is extremely relevant to today’s SCM environment.
The course provided an avenue to explore relevant subject matter at an in-depth level
Discussion board format was very effective.
The professor's feedback and stimulus to learning was great.
I have seen literally thousands of PowerPoint presentations in the past 23 years here at Boeing, and without a doubt the voice-over shows that you have on Blackboard are some of the "BEST" that I have seen. It allows a logical train of thought and keeps your interest as you go from slide to slide. We have web based training programs where they use voice -over and those are always better than the straight look at the slides and take the test programs. Thanks for all of your effort.
The PowerPoint Presentations and voice-overs were VERY helpful!!! I had a problem with some of the voice-overs cutting off but I believe I learned the basic concepts.
Having very limited experience with MS Project, I found this exercise interesting. Very eye opening with the functionality within Project. Looks like it could be a very powerful tool in managing projects. Will have to use project more to really learn all the functionalities and what it can do for us.
Personally, I LOVED the voice-overs. It really allowed me to understand what you were trying to convey. This is my first "distance learning" experience and the voice over made it more like being in the classroom. I also didn't need to spend as much time trying to "decipher" what the view graphs said - you actually told me. As we discussed during the residence, you're able to convey more that just the words through voice tone, sarcasm, pauses, etc. If this is where distance learning is headed, sign me up! Many thanks for the time and effort you donated to put this all together.
I actually enjoyed the shows very much!. There is definitely a wealth of information that the voice-over adds to the PowerPoint that cannot be understood with just the written word. I saved all the slideshows to my hard-drive and know they will be useful in the future. And, since I am not one to read software manuals, the projects within the assignment made for good practice. I felt the level of detail provided in your presentation was sufficient and helpful. I would encourage the continued use of the voice-over PowerPoint slides with future cohorts.
Note to Dr. Starling, the exercises are very useful in my personal workplace. I "self-taught myself" and can see the POWER of the areas that I missed!!! Thank you. You guys/gals are awesome!!!! This virtual team is phenomenal...look out world!!
Basically, I thought the tutorials with voice-over were great! Combined with the discussion board, it's every bit as good as being in an actual classroom, in my opinion - possibly even better due to the flexibility it gives. And I'm a social, interactive person, and I'm saying this! Other likes: - good pace, with limited redundancy or un-needed material - voice-over info provided good supplemental info (which is desired in any slide show presentation - live or otherwise); at the same time, it was great that there was limited voice-over in parts 3 & 4 - we knew the basics at that point and it was more efficient this way - excellent mix of written instructions/information and actual hands-on performance of tasks within Project (we all know there's nothing like actually performing an activity to learn it best) - all instructions and assignment activities within the presentation were very clear.
This was a great exercise for me in that I have had very, very limited exposure to what MS Project could actually do. Looks like a very powerful tool if used to it's potential. A great way to communicate with all involved, even across many miles. I can really see the benefit of this tool as we start working a project with others within our cohort across the country. A Great Exercise - Thanks!
I certainly learned a lot. I was probably using less than 5% of what you taught prior to starting your tutorials.
The group project which brought us real life experience was great.
Application of the class in field studies made it challenging.
The primary research project presented many challenges, but the knowledge and experience are rewarding.
Speakers and facility tours definitely shed the most light for me. I enjoyed Brian Greenburg of KES, Chula Vista (City of) Tour, Cubic Tour, Leslie Sutherland (of) Solar Turbines, & many more.
(The class was intellectually challenging…) because I had never thought of this subject but now think I will shift to this emphasis in my major.
The group breakout sessions. They were fun.
Yes, Dr. Starling’s class was challenging, but I could see the info applied in the “real” world.
Good job!
Out of class field trips were key to placing the material in context.
Dr. Starling knows the field very well, this much is very obvious, and he genuinely cares about his students.
(The class was intellectually challenging…) Yes, it was all about supply chain and material I was previously oblivious to.
The information allowed me to understand challenging aspects of how business works. In addition, I was able to grasp different challenging aspects of improvement.
The tours were truly essential to using the information learned, then using it to analyze companies.
(The class was intellectually challenging…) Because it brings a lot of ideas into the “real world.”
(The class was intellectually challenging…) Gave ideas, not just in textbook, but for use outside of class.
(The class was intellectually challenging…) It was completely foreign to me, and it forced me to look at real world concepts not just look at book applications.
Going on the tours (..contributed most to your learning.) Being able to see all theories in practice allowed me to gain more knowledge than I could get in the classroom.
(The class was intellectually challenging…) Trying to apply theoretical to the real world. Dr. Starling lets you do that.
The freedom to apply what is learned to real world projects, tours, speakers.
Instructor’s knowledge and visiting companies and going on tours (..contributed the most to your learning).
GREAT CLASS.
This class requires the students to put themselves into the business world and out of the student circle. The content of the class was very motivating.
The use of real-life examples and slides help the students comprehend the lecture instead of copying down the slide material.
Tours were helpful in providing real world examples.
The tours are great!
I liked the company tours to incorporate what we learned – to see it implemented.
Dr. Starling was trying to get the best out of us.
The real world examples that Dr. Starling shared with us in class (…contributed most to your learning experience).
Tours, speakers, special events, SCMA (…contributed most to your learning experience).
Professor is very academic minded posing challenges to those in business world.
Case studies and class discussion contributed most to learning.
Professor’s lectures are very interesting. Non-school learning through tours, informal discussion, very positive.
Professor Starling is one of the most informed instructor’s I’ve had.
Starling expects a lot from his students, which is a good thing, so you must strive to meet his expectations.
This class was challenging by the amount of studying done to succeed. The amount of knowledge was also huge.
Well written book.
I appreciated the broad introduction and general concepts. The course covered a lot of ground.
It (the course) has a very intensive schedule of quizzes, projects, and papers. Due to that it is hard to keep up with if you work 40 hours per week apart from school related material.
Great new material!
Great ideas, relevant to industry.
Class participation was awesome.
The tours to the facility (facilities) really helped illustrate what we learned in class.
The course was great. Dr. Starling really cared that his students learned the material.
He was always ready and willing to help me and the other students outside of class.
I don’t think that I have ever had a professor care about his students and their learning experience as (much as) Dr. Starling.
The tours up in Silicon Valley and LA, and the case studies --- I really got the opportunity to apply the knowledge I gained in class and solidify these concepts
Dr. Starling did a perfect job.
I got more out of this class than any other at USD.
The course material was engrossing, making the student have to get involved with every aspect of every idea.
It (the course) delves into the supply chain part of business, which is rarely touched on by other courses.
Dr. Starling presents challenging scenarios to find original solutions.
Great course.
Very practical and useful class.
Gives you a real-world perspective….
(I liked the…) Plant tours, SCMA lectures, Dr. Starling’s “real life” stories.
The supply chain field is very extensive, and there is a lot to grasp. I think we did a good job covering important and interesting topics.
He brought up info that was actually useful in today’s business environment… real life experiences.
The extra credit opportunities allowed us to meet professionals in industry. This was very advantageous.
The class is very interesting and makes you think.
His life experiences and examples (..contributed most to your learning)
The course material is in many areas unique and thus demands more reading than in other classes.
Some of the cases assigned to us were very demanding.
Doing the cases and listening to Prof. Starling’s in class examples and real-world stories contributed most to your learning.
Supply Management was the first class here that I really caught onto and thoroughly enjoyed learning.
I learned a lot about SCM that I was unaware of.
Good interaction with group
This information needs to be shared with everyone in our corporation.
Great job!
Really enjoyed the material, especially the personal stories and showing of information.
Lectures were very informative.
I plan on reviewing documentations and hopefully will be able to implement some of the skills and software…
Really enjoyed the full series of workshops.
Would be interested in future presentations
Courses have been helpful to learn more about logistics, warehousing and supply chain management.
Great! Very enthusiastic.
The type of information should be given every year.
Good classes!
Entire seminar (series) and topics presented were outstanding!
Will encourage more of this type of education.
…very professional and enjoyable
Very good course(s)
Professor was very knowledgeable.
I feel that other groups should encompass other groups, such as contracting and accounting.
This course tells the importance of operations management which is sometimes overlooked In fact, operations management is critical to gain competitiveness.
The professor teaches systematically and clearly about the course materials.
The materials are well organized with sound arguments.
Starling is very responsible, and his sense of humor stimulates us to learn.

Knowledgeable
Easy going
This was a very useful class.
Dr. Starling explains the material quite clear.
I have got(ten) a very detail(ed) explanation of this subject from Dr. Starling
I was so impressed by his strong effort to explain the subject.
Even though he is a sub-contractor he spoke our R6s language. Not all consultants that we have had before have done that.
Roadmap model is exactly what I've been looking for (…at my division).
Liked the stories Dr. Starling used to tie theories to real world situations; i.e. Mexico (Sony’s Mexicali Supply Chain), Boeing (Long Beach Supplier Development Program)
I really liked your view-graphs, examples, and overall style. Also fact based research.
Dr. Starlings material was good strategic background.
Did learn new tools! (Refers to use of Step Charts and DR2IVE.)
Good understanding of ISC (Integrated Supply Chain)

The material was useful and directly contributed to better understanding several aspects of my job.
Nothing negative to say at all.
Dr. Starling is a very smart guy who knows his stuff.
