SLIAFF was founded in 2009 and since it's inception has seen several different administrations. Some of our policies and procedures have evolved over time and are based off a decade of experience. As a group we are always evaluating our policies and do our absolute best to implement changes that are smart and ultimately benefits our departments, our group and the RP Community at large.
1) Why do you require a department to have a physical station in world in order to recruit in the group?
There are a couple of reasons:
In order to have RP, you need a physical location to hold it. We believe the responsibility of hosting RPs should be shared amongst the member departments. Additionally, we believe one of the biggest challenges that RP departments face is recruitment. It is such a challenge because most people would rather be "in-charge" of a department vs. be a member of a department. We believe it is better for the RP community at large to have fewer departments (that all have physical locations) than a lot of departments with 1 or 2 members each most of which cannot host incidents. We encourage people who do not have physical locations to join departments that do.
2) Why do you require a department to have a SLIAFF banner in their station?
Walk into almost any fire department with professional staff and somewhere in the station there is a union board. This shows solidarity within the group. They also serve a functional purpose as well. They are kept current with our website link as well as gives an "Anchor" for our staff to locate stations on SIMs quickly via area searches.
3) Why do you limit how many notices can be sent and by whom?
No one likes SPAM. This policy started when Second Life increased the amount of groups someone can belong to. If people haven't logged in to the grid for several days, they tend to have a lot of notices built up, many of which would be duplicates from a department who posted recruitment notices every day. Notices are held in the group for 14 days and can be reviewed by any member. We limit who can send notices and how many notices to prevent the group from feeling like it is SPAMMING notices because it ultimately takes away from the impact those notices have. It is a delicate balance and something we look at continuously. This is why the recruitment rules in Discord are looser, people can mute the recruitment channel if they wish.
4) Why do I have to fill out a "Complicated" form to get notice rights?
First, if you feel like the form is complicated, any of our staff is happy to help! Secondly, we use the information to visit your department and also to list your department on this website.
5) Why can't we post mutual aid request notices?
Anyone can post a request for mutual aid in GROUP CHAT. The reason is pretty simple, if you requested assistance in the real world would you use the radio or leave a voicemail? You want people who are available now, not people who see your notice 2 days from now.
