The purpose of these interviews is to hear the opinions of our peers on the violence, safety concerns, and the politics that surround them, in our own community. Thus, we conducted six interviews, and sent out a survey to conduct some statistics and informed impressions from the summer younger youth employment program.
Therefore, after conducting these interviews and surveys, we noticed that there’s so much that can be done to improve NYC into a community where everyone can feel safe. Which we hope to accomplish!
Throughout our journey, we have accomplished so much in learning about others' opinions of this community, which is the whole point of trying to make a change about safety concerns in NYC. By looking at our surveys and interviews, a lot of civilians don’t feel very safe in their community, even at home, and as the future generation we hope to build a safer place for everyone.
If you’re like us, and the information reflected by our collected data, indicates a lack of safety and comfort in New York angers you, you can petition our government to start the changes that need to be made. Please use the resource below and contact your New York State governor.
Quotes
These are highlighted portions of the interviews that we feel convey the avid safety issues our communities and New York as a whole face, and how the youth of New York are reacting to it.
“I don’t think it’s only a matter of what I would do but it’s a matter of what we ALL choose to do to help improve the community.”
“I don’t actually know how we could make our community better, there will always be some sort of issue.”
“More police presence and more understanding of different races and gender and how not to be biased against one another.”
Survey Data
From our survey we conducted 45 responses from our SYEP peers and facilitators, here are some responses that stood out to us. If you would like to take our survey, scan or click the QR code.
“I would want to overall see more authority and regulations. I feel somewhat safe in my community, yet at the same time I am a bit skeptical as there are so many drug deals that go around. At home, I try to feel safe however my house was broken into with the culprit never caught which always puts me on the edge. I do and not feel safe in the MTA, it makes me feel glad knowing I have a way to get to places however it’s a confined space that someone could get hurt in alongside hearing all the stories of such crimes being enacted.”
“There is police brutality, racist cops, and abuse of power.”
"Not harass civilians and actually go after people harming the community.”
Based on the responses we received, the majority feel that the cops aren’t helpful in many situations and feel like at this point, there isn't much we can do to better the police system in NYC because every cop handles situations differently and we never know the outcome.
