We are a diverse group of New York City high schoolers, unified by the SYEP program. Over a span of six weeks, we have synergized with one another in creating this website. We come together to share and address an important issue in the concrete jungle which we call home, violence. We as the future took it upon ourselves to convey how we feel about the matter through the creation of this website. Together we aim to promote a society filled with more love and less hate: a society that qualifies as safe and lives up to the prestige that we hold it at.
Below, you can learn about the members of our group and why social justice and anti-violence are important to us.
My name is Lizbeth. My working group was Interviews, and I choose that group because I thought it would be fun to interview people and get their point of views on things. The theme of gun violence is important to me because it is something that affects me in the future. I go to high school at Brooklyn Prospect Charter School, and my favorite color is purple.
Hi my name is Julia and I am in the Interview working group. I wanted to be in the interview group because when posed with this project, I was most interested to hear from real people who live here how these large issues affect their day to day lives. I go to Xaverian High School and I hope you enjoyed our website and learned something new!
My name is Lillian Rosenberg, I’m in the Interview group. I wanted to be in the interview group because I’m usually good with coming up with questions to ask people. I think gun violence is a huge problem worldwide. It needs to be controlled, people are losing their lives because of it. I go to highschool at FDR.
My name is Hanna. My purpose in joining the Interviewers team is to bring focus about the safety concerns around social justices, hoping to find actions we can all do to build a safer community. It shouldn’t be a privilege for some, but a right for everyone.
My name is Ruby Chavez and I am part of the SYEP program. I worked in the Interview group because I like hearing about others' opinions on the violence topic. I go to Brooklyn Prospect Charter school and I enjoy this project.
My name is Steven Perez Jr. My working group is the interview group and I feel like I was drawn by fate to that group. I have met some good people and had fun. This working experience has been one that I won't forget. Gun violence is important to me because I just want this world to be a better place and I will try to spread the word and try to get more people to be aware and take action on this specific topic. I bench press 225. I want to spread joy and love, and motivate and lead as many people as I can.
My name is Madeline, I am going to high school this year at Sunset Park High School. I am in the Interview group. I wanted to be in this group because I always wanted to hear other people’s thoughts through the interview. Gun violence is important because basically no one wants to ban guns.
Hello, my name is Rachel, I am part of the Interview team. In our group we conduct interviews and surveys to hear about what other peers feel or think about the safety concerns in our community. My first decision in joining a working group was the Interview group and I don’t regret making this decision because after hearing what others have to say about safety in our community, I feel very motivated in making a change in this society so everyone can feel safe. That’s all, have a good life!
Hello my name is Bryan Orellana. I work in the Tik Tok Skits group. I joined that group because I thought it would be fun acting and posting it on social media. Really having fun with my group, I love it here! :) Social justice is essential to me because I feel like I am making a difference out here in NYC and helping out others. I will start to go to Sunset Park High School this year (2022).
Hi. My name is Jason Zheng and I'm in the Social Media/Advertising group. I think violence is a big problem in NYC which is why I wanted to do something about it. I joined the Advertising group because I felt like we would have the most influence. I go to Brooklyn Technical High School.
Name’s Kenneth L. and I’m part of the Advertisement/Skit group. I believe I’m able to edit pictures and videos with utmost efficiency, hence I joined this group. After all, this group is perfect for my skills. Social justice is important to me because I want to live comfortably in the future, and so far, my future life may not be as decent as I hope it to be. Although I doubt this will make any difference on safety, I might as well make an attempt.
James here :)<3
I’m Genderfluid, and Pansexual. Basically I’m the most indecisive person you’ll meet. /hj
For Social Justice AM 1’s Project Based Learning project, my skills reside with the Design team, consisting of me and 5 girls; Celina, Cathy, Yo-Yo, Thinzar, & Vicky. I like to design layouts and enjoy web design as well, which explains my joining. Social Justice is overall extremely important to me especially because I fall under a lot of categories that aren’t as talked about or treated as well as the “norm” person. (LGBT+, Low-Income, Female born, Domestic Violence Survivor, and mentally different, etc.) My high school where I begin my freshman year this next month is Brooklyn Prospect Charter, based in Windsor Terrace.
My name is Cathy. I am in the Design working group. I chose to be in the Design working group because I wanted to help design a website that would attract people and spread awareness to the topic of violence. The theme of gun violence is important to me because it affects many people's mental health and day to day lives. Gun violence can also occur anywhere at any time which causes a dangerous environment for people to live in.
My name is Yoyo, and I am in the Design group. I want to be in the Design group because I am interested in design. This topic is important because gun violence happens in schools, which means it is our safety problem. I go to FDR High School.
My name is Thinzar. I am in the design group and the reason why I wanted to be in this group is because I can share my ideas and combine other people’s ideas of how the website should look like. Social justice is important to me because it revolves around equality and equity in our society. I go to High School for Health Professions and Human Services (HPHS). I like listening to music and hanging out with my friends.
My name is Celina. We are working on a social justice project about New York Safety issue. I believed we needed to address this issue because there are many concerns about our safety from traveling to just staying at home. New York City is a big place but also where many things can get flooded out. I hope through this project, we can give voice to people in our community to speak up their experiences with safety problems and to help you, the reader, realize that if you have or are experiencing any the violence we covered, you are not alone. Reach out for help because there will always be someone out there willing to help. I hope to provide you all the easiest accessibility to necessary information and that is why I am part of the Design Team.
I am Vicky. I'm in the Design team. The topic of gun violence is important because we want people to be more aware of it because people are dying because of it. We also want people to know that carrying guns and shooting randomly is unsafe. You should feel safe wherever you go and you shouldn't have the need to feel like it's hard for you to leave your house.
My name is Ryan Huang, and I am in the Facts and Statistics working group. I chose this group as facts and statistics are always reliable and elicit the truth. It shines a light on events and changes that need to be made. The theme of social justice is overall important to me as we live in a society that’s very diverse and constantly expanding. We deserve a future let alone a present in which equality, peace, and justice is established. I go to John Dewey High School. My passions are writing alongside other forms of creativity such as investing in the culinary arts.
I’m Rafael, a student at Brooklyn Tech. I am in the Facts and Stats group. I joined that group as I thought it would be essential to share the numbers of cases of violence for others to know how severe some problems are. To share this information would make others have knowledge and try to make a change. Social justice is important as everyone deserves to be equal and everyone should be treated equally.
My name is Brighton Yew, I’m going to Brooklyn Tech. I am part of the Facts and Statistics group, and I wanted to join this group because researching and writing data is familiar to me. Gun violence is important to me because knowing that the pull of a trigger can kill someone is horrifying to me. There are too many people using this weapon and this leads to many deaths.
My name is Amy Herrera and I go to Fort Hamilton High School. I am in the Facts and Statistics group. I wanted to join this group because I wanted to be more aware of problems in New York City. Social justice is important to me because I believe that equality and safety is achievable as long as people are willing to put in the effort to help others who are less privileged and in need.
My name is Spyder Ames-Luong. I’m in the social justice group because social justice is really important to me. I attend Brooklyn Technical High School.
My name is Kim. I'm 15 years old and attend Sunset Park High School . I chose to work in the Resources group because I want to be able help anyone who has been affected by any type of violence. It can happen to anyone of any age, ethnicity, race, gender, etc. so it’s important to have resources for all different types of people to help them feel supported and push through.

Social justice is important to me because violence is a very big issue in NYC. I go to Benjamin Banneker Academy.
My name is Jaden Christy and I work in the Resources group. I chose this group because I personally felt like resources were going to be the easiest, which I was wrong about. But, gathering all of these websites and searching for these sorts of things, is actually pretty cool. The theme of gun-violence is important to me because I knew people who passed away due to gun-violence, and it can be very heart-breaking, but gun-violence is on the rise, and it is not good at all. I attend John Dewey High School.
My name is Julio, I’m part of the Resource group. I wanted to be in the Resource group since it’s fun to learn about these topics. Gun violence is important to me because it’s affected me and my peers in one way or another. I go to John Jay School for Law in Park Slope.
My name is Elsie, I am a part of the Children Book group and I decided to join that group because I think it is very important to educate children about violence as they are young. The theme of violence is important to me because I have grown up in a city where violence is very common and happens a lot. I go to Highschool for Environmental Studies and I’m in 11th grade.
My name is Jaleya Graves. I was in the Children's Book group and I wanted to be in this group so I could use art to show my feelings on the topic and to give representation. I go to Brooklyn Collaborative Studies.
