The UNSC comprises 15 member states; 5 permanent members namely the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, France and China, and 10 non-permanent members that are elected by the General Assembly to serve a 2-year term. The primary purpose of the UNSC is to maintain international peace and security by determining the existence of any threat to peace or acts of aggression, and will call upon involved parties of a conflict to settle it with recommendations of policies to adjust or terms of settlement.
Being an intermediate (double delegation) council, the UNSC will be covering the issues of the Syrian Civil War and the Iran Nuclear Issue.
The Syrian Civil War began in March 2011. It was started by street protests demanding democratic reform due to high unemployment, corruption, the lack of political freedom and the release of political prisoners. With the conflict ongoing for 6 years to date, it is an issue that requires solutions on many fronts. The detrimental spillover effects can be seen worldwide through direct humanitarian issues or indirect social unrest and political issues. The UNSC has most recently failed to pass 3 resolutions that deal with the chemical attack, let alone a resolution that would end the violence. The Syrian Civil War requires a comprehensive solution soon, or the spillover effects will continue to escalate.
The Iran Nuclear Issue stems from Iran breaching the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) that was established in 1970. The NPT aimed to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and weapons technology, encouraging the adoption of peaceful uses of nuclear energy and in furthering the goal of achieving nuclear disarmament. While Iran has been a non-nuclear weapon state party to the NPT since its creation, it was discovered that Iran had hidden a clandestine uranium enrichment programme for 18 years, thereafter breaching the NPT. This Iran Nuclear Issue appeared to be reaching a resolution with the signing of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in 2015, and the U.S. Congress passing the Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act that required the president to verify Iran's compliance with the deal to Congress every 90 days. In recent news, however, President Donald Trump had accused Iran of not complying with the ‘spirit’ of the deal, and urged European allies to fix the problems regarding the deal. Therefore, the Iran Nuclear Issue is still seemingly very much rocky and unresolved, putting the safety of and relations between all parties at stake.
The other purposes of the UNSC encompasses the cultivation of amiable relations between states, encouraging cooperation in the resolution of international problems and respect for human rights by providing the platform to coordinate the actions of nations.
