The General Assembly is one of the main six organs of the United Nations, empowered to make recommendations to States on international issues within its competence. It is a unique forum for multilateral discussions that include the full spectrum of international issues covered by the Charter. It plays a significant role in the process of standard-setting and the codification of international law.
As an intermediate council, we will be tackling two issues; economic protectionism and data protections.
Data Protection is the process of safeguarding important information from being corrupted, comprised or lost. Over the years, the number of scandals surrounding the extraction of personal data globally has increased. It is of vital importance to place more emphasis on data security; not only for the privacy of personal information but for better transnational security as well, drawing a line between law enforcement and the right to protect one's own data.
Economic Protectionist Policies involve the implementation of tariffs and other barriers surrounding trade with other nations were most prevalent in the 19th century. Today, economic protectionism, also known as trade protectionism, continues to result in both benefits as well as disadvantages. Trade protectionism creates opportunities for local businesses to grow and rise above foreign firms, serving as a long term solution for local firm growth, but consumers are indeed denied potentially cheaper and better foreign product options. This is just one example of the many that delegates are supposed to consider with regards to this topic of economic protectionism being applied in the world today.
"In a world of complex threats, our security and leadership depends on all elements of our power; including strong and principled diplomacy."
