The Human Rights Council (HRC) is an important inter-governmental body within the United Nations System that is dedicated to strengthening the promotion and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms around the world and addressing situations of human rights violations along with passing recommendation thereon.
As a beginner-friendly council, we will be aiming to tackle the primary issue of preventing the discrimination and displacement of minority groups, and the secondary issue of assessing the rights of governments to mass surveillance.
The discrimination and displacement of minority groups is rampant around the world. Despite the UN's affirmation of the importance of the "promotion and protection of the rights of persons belonging to national or ethnic, religious and linguistic minorities", reality proves a different story as the incident of the Rohingya refugee crisis aptly shows. The crisis is one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world and there has been a lack of evidence to suggest that possible improvement is coming. The council aims to formulate solutions which ensure the protection of human rights for minority groups around the world both in the long and short term.
The prevalence of mass surveillance has risen in prominence but there appears to be a lack of discussion within the HRC regarding possible human rights violation that results from mass surveillance. In this council, we aim to identify and protect human rights from possible threats that emerge due to mass surveillance.
“The rights of every man are diminished when the rights of one man are threatened.”
