This year marks the sixth since the very first SJIMUN was launched in 2012. SJIMUN is a student-driven initiative where students from varying institutions and ages assume the roles of political leaders of their assigned countries in a simulation of a United Nations Conference.
Over the course of SJIMUN, delegates must work together to come to a resolution regarding their given issues, while managing crises, opposition and time, forcing them to balance tact, level-headedness and quick-thinking.
SJIMUN 2018 aims to create a platform where students can strengthen their sense of being a global citizen in addition to learning the value of diplomacy, while of course, forging friendships with their fellow delegates.
This year, the theme for SJIMUN 2018 is Unity Among Worlds.
Hello all,
SJIMUN 2018 has been built around our theme, Unity among Worlds. We find that today, much disorder and tragedy stems from a lack of unity. A lack of unity across governments result in an inability for decisive multilateral action. In organizations such as the European Union and NATO and the United Nations, we see that factionalism and infighting hinder collective credibility and negotiating power.
We also see that unity within governments is also critical. Factionalism within a state easily leads to incoherence and confusion for its allies, and opportunities for any cunning or expansionist adversaries, be they state or non-state actors. We are pleased to be organizing the United States Senate to help represent the process of decision making that happens within the halls of government. We hope that US Senate delegates will be able to collaborate towards greater progress while still maintaining the interests of state and party.
Lastly, it is also important for us to recognize how to maintain unity not only within static well-informed situations with ample time for in-depth deliberation, but also within radically evolving scenarios with missing or even unreliable information. It is for this reason that we have set up the two crisis councils- the Futuristic Crisis Council and the Historical Crisis Council. We challenge delegates to be able to take coherent, well-considered and multilateral action as situations escalate and tensions heighten. Across our 2-cabinet crisis councils, we look forward to seeing delegates do their best to resolve, avert and, if necessary, win political, economic and even military conflict.
We look forward to seeing you at SJIMUN 2018!
