San José City College offers an Associate in Science (AS), Associate in Science for Transfer (AST) degree and various certificates in Early Childhood Education (ECE). Graduates of the Associate in Science degree qualify through academic preparation and field experience for work in child centers, pre-schools, day care facilities, infant and toddler centers and other programs serving young children. They are able to use instructional techniques, which promote intellectual, social, emotional, physical, and creative growth in children. After completing the Associate in Science degree, students will be eligible for the Teacher Level of the State of California Children’s Center Permit, and qualify for employment as teachers in government and privately funded early care and education programs. Students planning to transfer to a 4-year university should follow the AS-T degree. A grade of “C” or better is required in all ECE major, certificate and major elective courses.

The Associate in Science in Early Childhood Education for Transfer (AS-T) degree meets the lower division course requirements necessary for the California State University (CSU) system. Graduates of the AS-T in Early Childhood Education qualify through academic preparation and field experience for work in childcare centers, daycare facilities, infant, toddler and preschool centers, and other programs serving young children. They are able to use instructional techniques, which promote cognitive, social, emotional, physical, and creative growth in children. After completing the AS-T in Early Childhood Education, students will be eligible for the Teacher Level of the State of California Child Development Permit, and qualify for employment as teachers or site supervisors in government and privately funded early care and education programs. In addition to working in childcare related facilities, the AS-T in Early Childhood Education also provides a foundation for students pursuing baccalaureate study in early care and education; child psychology; children, youth, and family services; child advocacy; social work and other social sciences.

The Associate Teacher Certificate of Achievement – Level 1 (12 units), aligns with the Child Development Associate Teacher permit. This is an entry level certificate, which allows students to provide service in the care, development, and instruction of children in a child care and development program, and supervise a CDP Assistant, and an aide. The courses included in this certificate can also be applied to Community Care Licensing requirements.

To qualify for the Child Development Teacher permit issued by the California Department of Education, students will also need an additional *16 units from approved General Education (GE) courses. The Child Development Teacher permit authorizes the holder to provide service in the care, development, and instruction of children in a child care and development program, and supervise a CDP Associate Teacher, a CDP Assistant, and an aide.

The Inclusion Specialist - Certificate of Achievement - Level 2 prepares students to work in the field of special education. Students will learn to integrate developmentally appropriate practices in promoting intellectual, social, emotional, physical, and creative growth in children with special needs. Throughout this program students work on developing skills for professional communication and interaction with children with special needs, and their parents who come from diverse backgrounds. Students learn to collaborate with professionals such as therapists and counselors who work with children with special needs. They will also learn about the legal requirements and laws regarding children with special needs. Graduates of the program qualify through academic preparation and field experience for work in child centers, pre-schools, day care facilities, infant and toddler centers, and other programs serving young children with special needs.

The Master Teacher Certificate of Achievement – Level 3 (32 units) fulfills the ECE requirements for the Child Development Master Teacher permit. To qualify for the Master Teacher permit issued by the California Department of Education, students will also need an additional *16 units from approved GE courses. The Child Development Master Teacher permit authorizes the holder to provide service in the care, development and instruction of children in a child care and development program, and supervise teachers, teacher associates, assistants and aides. The permit also authorizes the holder to serve as a coordinator of curriculum and staff development.
