For your final exam, instead of a written test, you will have an individual performance task that is a creative book review. Think of a combination between an infographic and a=a critique. On one hand, you have graphics and design, and on the other, you have comprehensive explanations. This will be on the graphic novel "This One Summer" by Mariko Tamaki.
The creative book review will have five main parts that you must supplement with graphics or incorporate into a coherent design:
A plot summary analysis takes a look at the central conflict in the story and how it unfolds as the story progresses. It answers questions such as:
It also takes a look at important parts of the story, such as the time and setting, exploring the effect that these two might have on the characters or on the story in general.
You might be confused because in the story, you'll find "sub-plots" with other characters. Such sub-plots that usually arise with minor characters are worth mentioning, particularly their effects on the central conflict (that always involves the main character). If you want to mention these minor conflicts, maybe ask how such problems with secondary characters push the central conflict forward. This would make a richer plot summary analysis. A plot summary analysis should generally be two to three paragraphs of about ten sentences each. Since this is a creative book review, you aren't bound to the sentence count but I do expect that you will be able to give a comprehensive analysis whether through graphics or through text.
A Character Analysis includes descriptions of primary and secondary (or major and minor) characters. It answers questions like:
Each character should have about two to three sentences describing them. I expect longer descriptions for major characters in the story. You could also put quotable quotes per character or a famous line in the story that encapsulates their personality. Aside from the descriptions, include a few sentences where you try to evaluate and connect with the characters. You could answer questions like:
Since we were only able to thoroughly discuss two topics (love and family) in 21st century literature, I want you to explore what this graphic novel reveals about love and family in the 21st century. You can try to answer the following questions in your analysis:
This should take at least 2 paragraphs of 8-10 sentences each. There is much to be said about the themes the graphic novel tackles!
The penultimate part is the medium analysis, where we take a look at the medium used in telling a story: the graphic novel or comic form.
A couple of sentences would suffice!
Lastly, your personal review. Give the story a rating out of 5 stars and explain why in 8-10 sentences. What is it that you liked or disliked about the story? Was there any meaningful take-away from it? What could it have improved on? Would you recommend this book to a friend?
Here are some awesome templates that you can easily find and customize on canva. You can find these templates in media kits or proposals. These might save you time and give you added inspiration for this report. The rubric for grading can be found in the classwork section of the google classroom.
