Much work needed to be done to develop the Jarvis Street Community Garden site during the 2025 construction season before we could start renting out garden spaces. But, as of early December 2025, we are starting to take applications and processing payments for garden plot assignments for the 2026 growing season. The preliminary garden plot application form can be found below. The application window will remain open through the end of January. Then, in the first week of February 2026, we'll start the process of reviewing applications and assigning plots for the 2026 growing season.
Interested future gardeners should take some time now to learn how the Jarvis Street Community Garden is intended to operate, i.e. as a cooperative venture where garden members are entitled to garden space assignments, but are also obligated to perform a modest number of service hours of work to benefit the overall project operations and maintenance. You can learn more about garden operations by clicking on the Membership menu / Rules for Gardeners submenu in the header above. If reading through rulebooks isn't your thing, here is a brief summary of the application process:
Step 1 - All interested gardeners must submit an online application as soon as they are available here in late 2025. The submission cut-off date is January 31, 2026. Late applications may be rejected if there are more applications than available plots. Paper applications will be made available at the Sitka Library, but must be hand delivered to, or mailed and received by either Joel Hanson or Barbara Bingham before the cut-off date. Joel's phone number is 907-738-1033, and his address is 417 Arrowhead Street.
Step 2 - Successful applicants will be notified by email within a few days of the application cut-off date of January 31, 2026. They will be issued a Membership Agreement form to sign. The Agreement form will specify the applicant's rights and obligations, including the exclusive renter's right-of-access to specific garden spaces and the obligation to contribute a specific number of service hours over the course of the one-year membership term.
Step 3 - The signed Membership Agreement form and assessed plot fees must be received by February 15, 2026. If an applicant fails to return their signed form and fee payment by the February 15 deadline, their application will be invalidated. Fees for 2026 are $55 per standard 10ft by 20ft plot and $10 per standard 2ft by 8ft plot for tall plants (think trellised pea vines or sunflowers.)
Step 4 - All successful applicants will need to attend a sit-down offsite pre-season orientation meeting in March (time and place TBD) to help ensure that the Jarvis Garden's first full year of operations goes as smoothly as possible. Several onsite orientation opportunities will follow, with garden members earning service hour credits for attendance (maximum 1/2 hour credit.)
