Antidepressants are common medications that people use to treat depression and anxiety.
There’s many different kinds of antidepressants and they can generally be grouped into different classes based on how they affect the different chemicals in your body.
Antidepressants generally have similar side effects but can slightly differ between classes.
Some common examples of antidepressants: fluoxetine, sertraline, citalopram, escitalopram, venlafaxine, duloxetine
Your medications may be covered under your parents insurance (many of the common ones are covered by Alberta Blue Cross).
Antidepressants typically cost between $5-25 per month depending on the medication.
Some patients may start to feel better in 2-4 weeks, but for major improvement it can take around 6-8 weeks. It can take up to 12 weeks to see the full benefits of the medication.
If there is no improvement at this time, there may be changes made to your medication. There are many different drugs you can try if one doesn't work for you.
If there is some improvement, the doctor may change the dose of your medication. This is to ensure you end up with the right dose for you.
It is common to experience side effects before you start to feel better. Most of these side effects often disappear in 1-2 weeks. However, if these side effects are bothersome and do not go away, speak to your doctor as there are other antidepressants you can try.

After you start feeling better, it is typically recommended that you stay on the medication for at least 6 more months

Your medication should be stopped gradually as it can lead to withdrawal symptoms when stopping too suddenly
