Parasitic Alien Prosthetic
The final part of my minor project involved coming up with the design for and creating a parasite in contact with skin prosthetic and sculpting, moulding, casting and painting and finishing the creature. I based my design off of a sea lamprey, as I was initially drawn to the mouth structure as an interesting design. Further development, however, led me to create the final creature that is protruding out of and burrowing back into the skin, with a blade fin slicing through the skin and claws surrounding the mouth latching back onto the skin. This was due to probable complications with the fibreglass mould, with thin parts of the mould being easily torn. I sculpted the creature and skin together with shivant and then fibreglassed on top, then cleaned the shivant out
In total, I cast three creatures out of silicone, with skintone pigment mixed into the pre-cured silicone to make painting the skin texture easier. I then cleaned the casts and used psycho paint to paint the skin tone and creature building up layer after layer.
I made the blade fins out of acrylic, primed and spray-painted them silver. I also varied the blades by giving one a serrated edge, and another's paintwork showing silver just at the edge of the acrylic. I made a cut into the creatures bodies along the top for the fins to fit in, and layered more psycho paint to make the blade a natural part of the body. I also added cured blood-pigmented psycho paint chunks along the blades to make it look as though skin has been caught on the creatures way out.
