2009
At the 2009 VMAs Taylor won video of the year for her song You Belong With Me. When giving her speech, Kanye jumps on the stage, takes the microphone from Taylor, and says the famous words
“Taylor, Imma let you finish, but Beyonce had one of the best music videos of all time.”
Taylor was only 19 at the time and was hurt, but forgave him and wrote the song Innocent as a tribute to Kanye
2016
In 2016 a video tape was leaked by Kim Kardashian (West) of a phone call between Kanye and Taylor, discussing some lyrics in a new song of Kanye's, before it was released.
Taylor approved of the lyrics: “I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex” but did not approve of the lyrics right after that he also released: “Why? I made that bitch famous”. Taylor does not like being called a bitch by the media or anyone, and this set off the twitter hashtag #TaylorSwiftIsOverParty.
People were getting on the “hate train” for Taylor and calling her a liar for saying that she didn’t approve of the bitch line. She was famously called a “snake” by the public and by many celebrities like Kendall Jenner and Katy Perry.
Taylor eventually went off all social media, clearing her instagram until over a year later
2017
Over a year after Famous was released, Taylor released the song Look What You Made Me Do in August of 2017, after she started posting again on her Instagram.
She posted images and gifs of snakes, referring to what people were calling her a year prior.
Because of all the hate she received Taylor decided that she could basically care less about her reputation any longer (which she always tried to keep as clean as possible) and came back at everyone.
She mocked both Kendall Jenner and Katy Perry in the music video of Look What You Made Me Do, as well as calling out both Kanye and Kim (Kimye) in many many lyrics in the song.
And finally at the finale of the video she mocked many character and stages of her career, going all the way back to debut and Fearless. She also included her acting and dressed in the same way she was at the 2009 VMA awards.
This situation was the most impactful inspiration to the Reputation record
